The Colby "Cheese" Rasmus thread

Post by Secret Weapon »

Because we need one of these right?

So far it looks like he is pressing, couple bad defensive plays, only batting .192, though it is still early. Do you have any reasons for this?

Well his dad does...
Colby's Dad wrote:Colby came into camp this year far removed from being game ready. Its all about peaking at the right time in order to be ready for the season. He went in knowing what he has to do in AAA in order to get to the big club in September. He should be fun to watch come April in Memphis, but you guys that have those high hopes for spring training may be disappointed. Got to keep the powder dry for when it counts.
Colby's Dad wrote:The wink was in reference to keeping the powder dry, in other words, not blowing your wad if it doesn't matter, which it doesn't. Oquendo is right, he will and should start in Memphis and he is piddling with some things right now. Last year his mindset was make the team, and when he didn't he tried to work on some stuff during the season, which was a huge mistake. This year he will work on that stuff in spring training and not when it matters, during the season. Much wiser is he.
Colby's Dad wrote:But, the most important thing as far as this year goes is his knowing where he stands with regards to having a chance to make the team or not. Knowing he is headed to Memphis has allowed him to get ready and plan for a successful season in AAA without expending the energy to make a team when there is no chance, like last year. I have stated earlier, the truth works better with him.
Do you buy that, and do you think that is smart of Colby?

Is there a way to take his dad's hands away?

I don't buy the narrative. Colby was hurt last year and struggled in Memphis, and Spring Training stats are essentially meaningless, especially over the course of a week.

If he thinks he had a chance last year and not this this year, then Colby's stupid, or Mo and Tony are liars without much of an angle.

Whatever helps his dad sleep at night; I'm sick of talking about it.

The notion that Colby isn't really trying now, saving "fuel in the tank" for a demotion to AAA, instead of trying to impress Tony and the coaching staff?

Yeah. funny stuff.

I'd guess that taking the offseason off was more sulking than a conscious decision to save himself for the season, but the practical upshoot will be that the Cardinals don't feel the need to start his arbitration clock a year early. The only thing I worry about is that if Tony doesn't see him as a trading chip already, I don't know how much longer it takes until he does. Trading Rasmus for Polanco, if the Tigers could be convinced to deal him, solves an awful lot of Tony's short-term problems. It also happens to be an idiotic move.

I thought I read Colby worked his butt off this offseason and came to camp with 10 more lbs of muscle (not an easy thing to do in 4 months). Am I taking crazy pills here?

He built muscle but refused to play winter ball and from the early looks, he didn't play ball at all. It's perfectly possible for a player to put on muscle and come into spring training ready to play, and Colby doesn't look like he did that. I don't think it's a big deal, since he has plenty of time to get ready, but whether or not he was going to have a chance to make the team out of spring training he didn't, by his own father's admission, put them in a position to have to make a tough call.

Sorry if I'm missing something but is this meant to be in jest?
