The Memphis Redbirds lost to the Round Rock Express 5-4.

• Batting Highlights:
  • Jon Jay was 2 for 5 with an RBI.
  • Casey Rowlett was 2 for 2 with a double and a run scored.
  • Allen Craig was 1 for 4 with a solo shot.
  Pitching Highlights:
  • Brad Thompson allowed four runs in five and two-thirds innings.
  • Royce Ring gave up two hits but also struck out two in a scoreless inning and a third.
  • Charlie Manning took the loss, allowing the decisive run in the 8th.

The Springfield Cardinals lost to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 12-6.

• Batting Highlights:
  • Daryl Jones was 2 for 4 with a walk, a double, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored. Line of the Night material for sure.
  • Brett Wallace was 2 for 4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Dan Descalso was 2 for 5 with two triples, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Steve Hill was 2 for 5 with a double. That's going to drop the average a bit.
  Pitching Highlights:
  • Ryan Kulik was promoted to AA. I'm not sure why. He allowed six runs in three innings.
  • Eddie Degerman: also bad. Three runs in two innings.
  • Same story for Elvis Hernandez. Only he allowed a homer too. Springfield's pitching is terrible right now.

The Palm Beach Cardinals continue to slide, losing to the Ft. Myers Miracle 4-3 in 10 innings.

• Batting Highlights:
  • Adron Chambers was 2 for 3 with a walk, a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Colt Sedbrook was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
  • Pete Kozma was 1 for 3 with two RBI.
  Pitching Highlights:
  • Mark Diapoules allowed two runs on six hits and two walks in three innings.
  • Scott Gorgen made his season debut and allowed a run on two hits and two walks in two innings.
  • Adam Reifer took the loss, allowing the winning run on two hits in the 10th.

The Quad Cities River Bandits won a doubleheader against the Wisconsin Rattlers.
They took the first game 4-2.

• Batting Highlights:
  • Brett Lilley was 2 for 3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
  • Ryde Rodriguez was 1 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Niko Vasquez was 1 for 3.
  Pitching Highlights:
  • Arquimedes Nieto allowed a run in three innings. He gave up two hits, no walks, and struck out five.
  • Adam Veres also allowed a run in three innings. He gave up two hits and two walks, struck out one.
  • Casey Mulligan got the save in the 7th with a perfect innings, striking out one.

  • Charlie Cutler was 3 for 4 with a walk, a homer, five RBI and four runs scored.
  • Domnit Bolivar was 3 for 5 with a homer and three runs scored.
  • Jon Edwards was 1 for 3 with two walks, a homer and two RBI.
  • Niko Vasquez was 1 for 4 with a walk, a double, and three runs scored.
  Pitching Highlights:
  • Hector Cardenas allowed all seven runs in three and two thirds innings, but only two were earned.
  • Kevin Thomas followed him up with a scoreless three and a third innings, giving up two hits and striking out three.

and now I see that Kulik is up because of an injury to Justin Fiske.

I guess he got it because he's one of the older players down there, but Lynn, Diapoules or even Kopp would make more sense.

I read about Degerman and Kulik and just rolled my eyes...this is why I'd rather go to a college baseball game. Teams aren't doing everything they can to win, they're doing everything they can to develop players (which is what they should be doing).

Look for lefty reliever Sam Freeman to make the jump at some point soon. He's holding hitters under a .170 average. Curt Smith could mash off the bench/DH as well. Shane Peterson is advanced, and needs to be challenged, but the OF is so deep already. Lance Lynn is not a guy I've ever liked, but the team does, and he'll be up sooner rather than later I suppose.

Why is Anderson only starting about 50-60% of the time in Memphis?

Gotta keep our third catcher in playing shape, of course. The real question is why Anderson isn't our third catcher. The player development aspect of this just has to take precedence over Tony and Dave's pickiness about catchers.

Anderson has tailed off pretty badly as the past couple seasons wore on...maybe limiting him a bit will keep his bat fresh for later in the season...

should be getting a few more at-bats than he is, though...
but I get the feeling that TLR and Dunc are not that high on him...
