Which is exactly the point I was trying to make a few weeks ago. It looks oh-so-easy to us fans, this playing a game for a living, but it's not. As Leo Durocher used to say, if it was that easy, there'd be nobody left driving the trucks.cardsfansince82 wrote:Some players and even managers just can't handle the pressure.

I'd pass out in the dugout, tbh. Vomit, even.

At this point, I'm cool with KG to the DL and putting Spaz at SS for most of the time. If we are going to get a .660 OPS from SS, he might was well play defense well.

Having an article about it may help him. If people don't expect much from him, he might not expect as much, which might cause him to relax. People sometimes complain that some use disorders as excuses (and some do), but for others recognizing that one is battling a limitation allows them to relax, have less fear of failure, and succeed more.

It kind of depends on whether he's anxious about meeting the standards that he perceives others have set for him or the standards that he's set for himself. At this stage in his life and given the physical punishments of himself, it's more likely to be the latter.JCShutout wrote:Having an article about it may help him. I'm with Jim on this one. The issues that he needs to deal with are not likely to be helped by "reducing his role." He needs to adopt/habituate a more positive outlet for his anxiety, and he needs to find/be taught methods to keep his mind from wandering and losing focus. Really, he needs professional help...not extra time in the batting cage or taking fielding practice.

Not to make light of Mr. Greene's serious personal issue, but for some reason I thought of this scene from the movie "Bottle Rocket." I suppose every profession brings its own challenges, but many of us would love to have the kinds of problems, and the options for help for them, that some of these multimillionaire athletes have.
Anthony: You told, you told your friend Bernice I'm some kind of jet pilot?
Grace: What was I supposed to say, they stuck you in an insane asylum?
Anthony: It wasn't an insane asylum, Grace. I explained to you back then that it was for exhaustion.
Grace: Exhaustion?
Anthony: Yes, exhaustion.
Grace: You haven't worked a day in your life. How could you be exhausted?

Re: K. Greene Has Anxiety
I've known the kid (to me, most everyone is a kid) since college. He has a tendency to look ahead, not stay in the moment. For instance, its like a pitcher with the bases loaded with a full count. Looking ahead--which is bad--you might think to yourself "I've got to throw a strike here or I'll walk in a run." Someone staying in the moment thinks "good mechanics, hit my arm slot, throw it by him." Greene has a case of looking ahead, and this intermittently happens with him.
I think he needs to get away...staying on the bench just reinforces the looking ahead...when will my teammates respect me, how many hits do I need to get on pace to hit .300, etc. Just DL him, don't send him to Memphis or anywhere else. Have him talk to psychiatrist. Get his meds adjusted as needed. Stay away from the park...let him come and go as he feels while on the DL.
The talent is there...I just hope he's ready to display it this year. Let's hope that 2/3 weeks from now, he'll feel better about himself, and there won't be a need to worry about the future, and he will have the confidence to stay in the now and how far he's going to hit the next pitch.

One of my favorite movies. The little girl makes that scene.

Re: K. Greene Has Anxiety
This oughta make him less anxious.
http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/r ... d+Sox+NewsThe Cardinals are shopping Khalil Greene, and have inquired with the Sox about their interest. Greene is hitting .210 with two homers and 14 RBIs and has committed six errors. Bobby Crosby is hovering around .200 in Oakland. Are either the answer? The Sox appear to have enough offense that obtaining a defensive specialist could tide them over.
