Re: UPDATE: Cards Close to Acquiring Holliday, page 18
yeah, to be clear, I think Halladay would be the bigger upgrade. I just don't think we were ever going to be able to get him without giving up Rasmus or Wainwright.
I don't think he'll be moved at all this year.

You asked which one gains more wins, why would anyone assume you are talking about the playoffs?AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:Not in the playoffs.cards2468 wrote:Why would Joel or Lohse be bumped out of the rotation? I agree, but what I'm saying is that Holliday, if he would accept arb, would just replace Glaus and part of Pineiro's salary which come off the books after this year. It's not as though we can't afford him. Not to mention, there'd be no need for this four outfielder rotation BS. Holliday, Rasmus, and Ludwick plus two bench guys (Jay and Stavi?) There's money saved right there as well. I just hope we're not paying for a rental if this thing happens.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:The cards payroll is 88 mil. Plus 16 mil, they're at 104. Far from out of their league.....Swingingbunt wrote:Troy Glaus plus half of Pineiro...cards2468 wrote:If he accepts arbitration, we'll get him for a year at probably $16 mil, which isn't the end of the world.JL21 wrote:That's the other scary thing... what if his asking price is huge, nobody signs him, and the Cardinals have to take him to an arbitration judge? It's worth noting we'll get draft picks if he declines arbitration in the off-season.

It's also worth noting Wallace was never in our long-term plans (1B/DH) and we are fighting for a playoff spot. Sometimes you gotta overpay and go for it.
Mo is going for it.

The Cardinals have shown they will spend more for the right guy. Holliday is that guy, imo. The Cards were like 8 or 9 in payroll for a while... now I believe they are 13 orso....JL21 wrote:That kind of thing torpedoes any foray they have into the FA market. You budget X amount to spend in free agency to fill whatever holes you can fill. But out of the fear of that happening (Holliday going to an arb. judge), you drastically reduce that amount you'd spend on FA just because you don't want to blow your budget out of whack on one guy.Michael wrote:JL21 wrote:That's the other scary thing... what if his asking price is huge, nobody signs him, and the Cardinals have to take him to an arbitration judge? On the other hand, you have an excellent player with the low risk one year contact before an AP extension. My guess he'll get around 18m-20m? Not ideal, but it could be worse.
I'm warming a little too.

According to ESPN.com's Tim Kurkijan, the Cardinals are close to acquiring outfielder Matt Holliday from the A's.
Kurkijan, echoed by fellow ESPN.com writer Buster Olney, claims the Cardinals will give up top prospect Brett Wallace plus right-hander Clayton Mortensen and outfielder Shane Peterson. It seems like a very high price to pay for Holliday, an impending free agent who is owed around $6 million for the rest of this season. But, hey, Oakland GM Billy Beane has swindled the Cardinals before and is plenty capable of doing it again.

Hopefully Holliday can maintain this line at Busch Stadium.

I apologize for my vagueness. Yes, in the regular season, Halladay obviously replaces Welly. My bad. I don't think if you're the Cardinals you do this to simply get to the dance, I think you do it to try to dance the longest.Ace wrote:You asked which one gains more wins, why would anyone assume you are talking about the playoffs?AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:Not in the playoffs.cards2468 wrote:Why would Joel or Lohse be bumped out of the rotation? they haven't been 'serious' buyers like this (3 trades) since 04.
