Scoring more than the other team four times out of seven wins series. Do that three times and you've won a championship.

all of his magic pixie dust intangibles (he's bald! he hustles! he was clutchtastic in the playoffs one time!)
He's 29. He's a career 925 OPS hitter. He runs well, hits for power, and is a capable fielder. He got off to an abominable start this year, but has still put up decent enough numbers overall, while playing in a tough pitcher's park in a brand new league.

I'm a bit of a Wallace fan, and I hate paying so much for a guy who is unsigned. But at the end of the day, I think I do it. And if he is not the guy we "find the money" for, then I officially give up on these owners and this front office.

Sources: Cardinals on the verge of Holliday deal
by Ken Rosenthal

Albert Pujols is getting help.

The Cardinals are on the verge of acquiring outfielder Matt Holliday from the A's, according to two major-league sources.

In return, the A's are expected to receive third baseman Brett Wallace, right-hander Clayton Mortensen and another prospect.

The Cardinals rank eighth in the National League in runs per game, but their offense has been sporadic.

Holliday, a free agent at the end of the season, has been hot in recent weeks. He presumably will bat cleanup for the Cardinals, giving Pujols arguably the best lineup protection he has had in his career.

The move is certain to be welcomed by Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who has lobbied for the addition of Holliday and is in the last year of his contract.

It also is certain to be well-received by Pujols, who can be a free agent after the 2011 season and has questioned ownership's commitment to winning.

The Cardinals added infielder Mark DeRosa earlier in the trading season, and Holliday amounts to an even bigger addition.

I agree completely. There's really not much to "not" like about Holliday, really.

The minds-that-be get hammered for doing nothing. Some will rip them for doing too much (as may be the case here). Honestly, they're not going to please everybody, no matter what they do.

Holliday may be our best chance at a playoff run and World Series this year
surely you jest. i hope..
of what we have available and are likely to get, no I'm not jesting. It sounds like we've been out of the Halladay discussion for a while. Holliday was much more attainable.

Who would you prefer?
Plus, look at it this way. What gains us more wins. Halladay over todalion or Holliday over Ankiel/Stainoha?
this.

Pitching wins championships..
Weaver, Carp and Suppan won in 2006. I would take Carp, Wano and Lohse/Pineiro any day of the week.

seasons like 2006 come once in a lifetime. You can't use that as a reason to stay put.

Cards trades always seem to come out of nowhere anyway; not sure if I buy that this is going to happen due to how big news it is.

According to ESPN.com's Tim Kurkijan, the Cardinals are close to acquiring outfielder Matt Holliday from the A's.

Kurkijan, echoed by fellow ESPN.com writer Buster Olney, claims the Cardinals will give up top prospect Brett Wallace plus right-hander Clayton Mortensen and outfielder Shane Peterson. It seems like a very high price to pay for Holliday, an impending free agent who is owed around $6 million for the rest of this season. But, hey, Oakland GM Billy Beane has swindled the Cardinals before and is plenty capable of doing it again.

That's too high a price to pay and would be a swindle, IMO.
no one should lose any sleep over mortenson and/or peterson. if they are the grease thrown on the gears of an impact player trade to make them turn, then grease away. They are organizational filler.
Perhaps, but it seems like Mortensen is the only 5th rotation pitcher anyone gives the time of day to in minor league prospect evaluations I read.

If the Cards go out and get some other pitcher anyway, then it's fine, but I would think if they make this move they wouldn't take on any more payroll.
Boggs, Garcia and Lynn.

I was just thinking about that. I wish he could board a plane now to be in the lineup tonight.

To the uninformed crowd....or that crowd that just watches and doesn't pay too much attention to the minors....this will be a steal for the Cardinals. Not everyone knows who wallace and peterson are and mort got lit up in the majors.
