all of his magic pixie dust intangibles (he's bald! he hustles! he was clutchtastic in the playoffs one time!)
He's 29. He's a career 925 OPS hitter. He runs well, hits for power, and is a capable fielder. He got off to an abominable start this year, but has still put up decent enough numbers overall, while playing in a tough pitcher's park in a brand new league.
I'm a bit of a Wallace fan, and I hate paying so much for a guy who is unsigned. But at the end of the day, I think I do it. And if he is not the guy we "find the money" for, then I officially give up on these owners and this front office.
He also plays LF (a position that demands better production anyway, and the average productivity there is much better than other spots on the diamond); has ballpark concerns due to Coors (I think they're overstated but still a factor); and because of those intangibles, has a reputation that doesn't match his productivity but is likely to lead to an elevated price.
Basically they're in the unenviable position of having to pay out the nose to keep him because they gave up Wallace for him, or brace themselves for more wrath from fans regardless of what kind of deal Holliday might sign elsewhere.
Holliday may be our best chance at a playoff run and World Series this year
surely you jest. i hope..
of what we have available and are likely to get, no I'm not jesting. It sounds like we've been out of the Halladay discussion for a while. Holliday was much more attainable.
Who would you prefer?
Plus, look at it this way. What gains us more wins. Halladay over todalion or Holliday over Ankiel/Stainoha?
this.
Pitching wins championships..
Weaver, Carp and Suppan won in 2006. I would take Carp, Wano and Lohse/Pineiro any day of the week.
seasons like 2006 come once in a lifetime. You can't use that as a reason to stay put.
They won in 1982 with Andujar, Forsch, Mura and Stuper.

This is 100 percent golden information.
You will have to just trust me on it.
Announcement later today if all goes well.
John Mozeliak has just boarded a plane, and is en route to Philadelphia -- which should tell you all you need to know.
I do not know anything about whether the Cardinals have talked to Holliday about a contract ... too early to know... sorry.
The deal will be as first reported by Tim Kurkjian of ESPN: Brett Wallace, Clayton Mortensen and Shane Peterson to Oakland for Matt Holliday.
Garcia is coming off of a TJ and is a question mark.
Most scouting reports I've seen sort of scoff at Lynn's abilities- he's another classic Luhnow guy who'll come fast to the majors and then [expletive] the bed, just like....
Mitch Boggs, a 25-year old pitcher with a 1.54 WHIP in AAA. He can't even get [expletive] MiLB hitters out right now. And that's in line with his career MiLB WHIP of 1.4. He's had two stints at the MLB level and has been hit, hard, both times. He has one good pitch and nothing else. The day that his ass moves to the bullpen, where he belongs, we can end this silly speculation that he'll ever be a MLB starting pitcher, even as some team's crappy #5.
