The Cardinals have completed a trade for Oakland outfielder Matt Holliday, the Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold has confirmed.

“If he gets here, he plays,” Tony La Russa told Goold via text message about using Holliday in tonight’s game vs. Philadelphia.

Holliday was told by his agent Scott Boras this morning that a deal was done, and Holliday is telling his former teammates in Colorado that he’s a Cardinal, sources told Goold.

A Cardinal source said the team does not have a commitment from Holliday or his agent for a contract extension in place, but the team is hopeful it can convince Holliday to sign.

To get Holliday, the Cardinals are sending Oakland third baseman Brett Wallace, outfielder Shane Peterson and pitcher Clayton Mortensen. The A’s will also contribute $1.5 million to the Cardinals, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney, who first broke the news of the trade.

Playing in St. Louis, he was 3-for-10 with a double and an RBI in 3 games at Busch II, and is 15-for-39 with 5 HR and 7 RBI in 11 games at Busch III.

So while he may be a Coors hitter, he's done pretty well in St. Louis, too - I'll gladly take 18-for-49, a .367 average with 5 HR and 8 RBI in 14 games.
Now if we can just get the Cardinals pitchers to pitch to him, we'll be set.

It probably helped that he was facing some pretty bad Stl pitchers at times in those games at Busch.

With that said from a Cubs fan viewpoint, its a good deal for the Cards. They have gotten an upgrade, but if they cant re-sign him then the deal gets worse. Things definately just got more interesting in the NL Central.

Sweet. I'll get to see this.

Thanks doc.
I've always wondered, how will he get here.... surely the Cards have a plane, right?

Or do they just get him a coach ticket on American?
He'll ride Wallace's bus.

We can only hope he doesn't miss it.

Wow.
I don't like that it took 3 players.
Anyone think that $1.5M goes directly to Shelby Miller? If so, and we just effectively traded Wallace and "organizational filler" for Holliday and Miller, I'd call that a win.
You know Tony went from 6 to 12 when he found out.

I assume the $1.5 mil is considered compensation for Wallace's bonus, no?

It doesn't necessarily get worse if they get the two first round picks. Then it is just a matter of preference.

Spending ~15 million per on Holliday or getting two first rounders.
