Angels general manager Tony Reagins said Monday that he's not currently pursuing free agent outfielder Matt Holliday.
"He's a talented player," Reagins said of the 29-year-old Holliday. "But our focus is not on him right now." The Angels are hoping to attract John Lackey and Chone Figgins back to Anaheim and don't really have an open spot in the outfield, especially for a player commanding big bucks. Holliday's openly interested suitors currently include only the Mets and Cardinals.

Re: Update: The Matt Holliday Off-Season Thread
On Mike & Mike this morning they were talking with Jason Stark, and saying Holliday would be lucky to get half of what Teixeira got. They peg him around 5yr/75-80 million.
Take that for what it's worth...which is probably not much...but now that the Yankees and Angels are staying on the sidelines (for the time being), is there anyway we can't get this done?

Re: Update: The Matt Holliday Off-Season Thread
So now the Angels, Mets, and Yankees are all allegedly out of the Holliday chase.
Which is more likely- that those three teams are out of the chase? Or that those three teams are saying those things in a meager attempt to gain leverage against Boras?
He'd be a good fit with all of those teams, IMO (as well as the Cardinals, of course).

A couple things regarding this.TimeForGuinness wrote:On Mike & Mike this morning they were talking with Jason Stark, and saying Holliday would be lucky to get half of what Teixeira got. They peg him around 5yr/75-80 million.

1. It's Mike and Mike and Jason Stark. So, like you said, take that for what it's worth.
2. The Yankees aren't interested in, say, a Texeira type deal for Holliday from what I understand. But, I find it hard to believe they wouldn't be interested in a 6/100 type deal if it presented itself to them in Holliday. Same way with Boston and a handful of other teams I imagine.
3. At what point does Holliday (read, Boras) simply accept arbitration, get paid 16 mil and hit the market next season when there are more suitors? I find it highly unlikely Boras let's Holliday sign for 5/75-80.
4. On top of all that, according to one of the P-D guys, the Cardinals have apparently offered 6/96.......so either M&M are wrong, or the P-D guy is. I don't know.

Regarding #4, I'm guessing they're all wrong.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:A couple things regarding this.TimeForGuinness wrote:On Mike & Mike this morning they were talking with Jason Stark, and saying Holliday would be lucky to get half of what Teixeira got. They peg him around 5yr/75-80 million.

That would be awesome, honestly, if that happened.3. At what point does Holliday (read, Boras) simply accept arbitration, get paid 16 mil and hit the market next season when there are more suitors? I find it highly unlikely Boras let's Holliday sign for 5/75-80.
As for the contract offer by the Cards, I thought that the PD later reported that the Cards hadn't made a contract offer.

Fair enough, 2468. I love to take contradicting reports and put them up against each other though ensuring that at least one person is wrong. But, yeah, I agree with you.

Nope, I agree...but if all these teams are forcing Boras and Holliday into a lower pay bracket, why can't the Cardinals compete? If all the offers are similar, why not take the Cardinals offer and play with Pujols and Waino?AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:A couple things regarding this.TimeForGuinness wrote:On Mike & Mike this morning they were talking with Jason Stark, and saying Holliday would be lucky to get half of what Teixeira got. Of course Boras is going to turn down 6/96 a week after the World Series...when he wants 8/180...but maybe it seems that the Cards offer is right where Holliday's value is with all the other teams.

That was Strauss, and he later retracted that (it was a day or two after initially reporting it). Mozeliak, Boras, and others have all stated that the 6/$96M offer was never made.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:4. Re: Update: The Matt Holliday Off-Season Thread
I completely agree with this. The way this club is set up and the payroll it has available there is no reasonable reason why we should get outbid IF Holliday is forced into a "lower pay bracket". I still maintain that we have the equalizer of familiarity and conention potential that's a trump card for comparable contract offers.Nope, I agree...but if all these teams are forcing Boras and Holliday into a lower pay bracket, why can't the Cardinals compete?
