I actually don't think it's an unreasonable assumption to think he'll be substantially better from age 30 to 34 than he'll be from 35 to 36. His leaving and allowing us to put that money somewhere else doesn't strike the kind of fear into me that being hamstrung by an Encarnacion or Kennedy-like contract does. It's a 5 year contract with the possibility of an additional year or two. Do you really think he's going to go into the tank that bad? There's obviously more options, probably much more realistic, than rake and tank. I think we'll be able to weather the storm of two more years of Holliday is, God forbid, he decides not to opt out.haltz wrote:Let's say he puts up a 140 OPS+ for the next five years and the market inflates substantially. It's going to be very painful when he opts out. Maybe he puts up numbers, opts out, and then is terrible for two years (or three or whenever it is)? I guess that's possible. He could also get hit by a bus and we pay him $120M for nothing.
Or if he's the much more likely, somewhere between "sucking" and being an elite all star that demands 28 year old HOFer money at the age of 35. Or simply decides he'll stick with the current team as he only has a couple years left and his hundreds of millions don't actually need an additional two or three to supplement it.haltz wrote:I don't know how else to say it. We're committing to him either way, but the only way we see him in those years is if he sucks.

Has he? Some here would argue that we're bidding against ourselves and throwing multiple millions more than is necessary to sign him.planet pujolsian wrote:As impatient as we (diehard fans) are, I'm impressed by Mo sticking to his guns. I assume so. I thought that the fact that he was in attendance was worth noting.Michael wrote:That's not uncommon.docellis wrote:flurry of face-to-face meetings among Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr., general manager John Mozeliak and Holliday's agent, Scott Boras, in Austin, Texas. that argument was when we were talking 5 years $98.5 million. The current rumors have it back down to the $17-18 million a year range, which most of us are happy with and feel like Mo stuck to his guns when he could have bid himself up to the aforementioned 5 year $98.5 million range.Richie Allen wrote:Has he?
