AHAHAHAHA. Yeah. That will end well.
This cannot be true, right? For Chrissake, Braden Looper is out there, waiting to be had. And then there's Tim Redding and Brett Tomko.
Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports that right-hander Mike Lincoln will get a chance to compete for the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation.
It's a pretty harebrained idea. Lincoln, who turns 35 in April, hasn't made a start in the major leagues since 2000 and missed the latter part of the 2009 season after undergoing cervical disc replacement therapy in July. Nothing in his track record suggests he's durable enough to handle such an assignment. Micah Owings and Matt Maloney will probably have a say with the fifth spot, as well.

Jeff Weaver's no longer available, as the Dodgers signed him to a minor league deal. I'm surprised that Washburn is still available.

I just checked out some of the comments over at nsbb regarding the projections and they are pretty funny. Kind of range from the Cubs undoubtedly being worse than the Reds to the Cubs having the best pitching and offense.

Yeah, I wanted to participate in that discussion, but my registration is awaiting approval. The odds of the Cubs having the division's best offense and best pitching are slim. And then there's defense.

I think most objective baseball fans would say the Cardinals are the favorites, in spite of us making "one of the worst deals in major league history." So, who's the second best team in the NL Central? I think the Cubs, Reds and Brewers appear to be about even. Maybe this should be its own thread.

Who would you all say is the Wild Card favorite? Are the Dodgers clear favorites in the NL West?

Who said we made one of the worst deals in MLB history?

PECOTA has the Dodgers 3rd behind the DBacks and Rox. If Jackson and Harren stay healthy that is one helluva jolt to a pitching staff, plus they picked up Johnson. I'm not buying it though, I'd probably go Rox or Dodgers over AZ.

WC has probably the best chance to come out of the West.

Some anonymous MLB official, according to Olney. See here: http://gatewayredbirds.com/forum/viewto ... start=2080

I agree more with the projections that haltz posted at the start of this thread. I see Arizona winning a lot more games than they won last year, but no way would I say they're NL West favorites. Key for Arizona, I think, will be Webb's return. Jackson just replaces Scherzer. Davis and Garland are gone, and I'm not sure who is projected to make up the bottom 2/5ths of Arizona's rotation. Upton and Reynolds make for a nice duo.

Registration gets approved in batches at NSBB. You're well worth having for discussion though, what name did you register with?

I'm the one who said the Cubs have the best pitching and probably the best offense. Maybe overstating a bit with the offense, but I'm more optimistic than most about this coming season, and frankly I'm sick of thoughtless, fatalistic Cubs fans who seem to think the Cubs will be lucky to break 70 wins(exaggerated, but the sentiment is there).

Personally, I think the Cards and Cubs are 1a and 1b in the division, and the Reds and Brewers will see who can non-pitch themselves into a distant 3rd. Like I mentioned in that thread, a large part of the Cards advantage in projections is in their defense. While they certainly have some strong defenders, I'm less sold on the certainty of the value of that defense because the Cards have their best defenders at positions where the metrics are least reliable(Molina, Pujols) or in players who don't have the necessary innings under their belt for such lofty UZR numbers to be an expectation(Ryan, Rasmus). IMO the two teams aren't separated by more than a game or two, which is enough for me to say it's a tossup.

Thanks. Eephus Speed.

I think the Cubs will finish above .500, unlike many of your NSBB peers. But I do think both the Reds and Brewers stand a good chance of being right there with the Cubs. Bruce will probably have a big year, and the Reds have a strong defense. They need Harang and Bailey to pitch a lot more innings this year. If Wolf and Davis can more or less replicate their '09 seasons, what was an 80-win Brewers team should have a much-improved rotation. Weeks staying healthy would also help. Tough to say what they'll get from CF to replace Cameron.
