Need to remember that Dexter is not a hero. He's a very evil man.

I'm not sure evil is exactly right.

I'd like to see Harry's whole premise for Dexter challenged. He sees this kid of his who's troubled, and instead of trying to get him help he turns him into a quasi-vigilante. And you could argue he did it for his own reasons (i.e. wanting criminals to pay). There have been hints of this, and Rita's influence has changed him, but it's pretty much accepted that being a present at his mother's killing turned him evil. Realistically there's no reason to accept that. I know it's sort of the premise of the show, so maybe the last season would be a good time.

I'm also hoping his sister finds out at some point.

Non-traditional hero, I suppose. But there are a lot of traditional heroes much less identifiable than Dexter.

There's been 1 innocent death at his direct hand. There are 'heroes' with a higher fatality rate.

That being said, there's an argument that had he left things up to the 'proper' authorities he wouldn't have ended up in the mess he did. Things could have ended better if he wasn't killing people. And had the need to kill people.

But he's not the anti-hero that Denzel is in Training Day, Alex from Clockwork Orange, Macbeth or maybe even the biggest anti-hero - Michael Corleone.

He's different.
[SHOW]
That last scene between Dexter and Lithgow. I read where Hall and Lithgow said it's even better looking back, and the second/third time there is so much. When Dex says "I have a family' and Miller doesn't respond. He responded quickly to everything, with wit and strength and without hesitation. Dexter says 'I have a family too", and it's the only time he has no answer. He smirks at Dexter's attempt to 'be good. For them'. They compared faults, strengths. Everything. Dexter shares some professional courtesy. Even ending the cycle that Miller started. Ending it correctly with the father of two being bludgeoned. Poetic. Perfectly written. One of the few shows that stays true to the development and paths the characters take. No matter where it leads. After Arthur he mentions the moon, Rita looking at it at the same time. 'Connected by light'. He finds light, only to be lead back to the dark passenger. Then the Rita montage? How did I not see it coming? There's the scene where his son is ont he floor int he middle of the bathroom, alone. Major foreshadowing. It'll be interesting to see how he deals with it.
It just reminds me of the old Hemmingway short story - The Short and Happy Life of Francis Macomber. He was once asked if she did it on purpose. Hemmingway smirked and replied 'I don't know.'.

That's art. Literature. Good story. You create characters, put them in a situation, and they make a decision. You let it play out. I think there are more than a few points where Dexter acted out of character in the last season that would have changed the outcome (the outburst at the officer that got him arrested for one), but nothing that couldn't be logically explained.

I dunno. I just love the show and the writers and think they do a great job of being fresh and bringing some depth of character and conflict rarely seen on screen much less a tv series.

I don't think of Dexter as evil. Again, only 1 innocent he killed. I would think of a lot more words to describe Dex than evil.

When does Dexter return?

Per Wiki:
Showtime has renewed Dexter for a fifth season, which is set to premiere September 26, 2010. Julia Stiles will guest star in 10 episodes as a new woman in Dexter's life. Shawn Hatosy will appear in a multiple episode arc as a "bad guy". Maria Doyle Kennedy will also join the cast of Dexter in Season 5 as an Irish nanny. April Lee Hernandez has been called for a recurring role as a police officer, presumably working in Miami Metro’s homicide department.

Great, I'll never look at her the same way again.

Julia Stiles is a great hot or not candidate. I've always thought she was attractive, but I know many people don't.
