I hate this deal, but if the Cardinals can get Drew today, I will be happy as a fat kid in a candy store.

Now, only speculation has been made about that. But, just saying. The day isn't over. Other deals can be done to improve the team.

I'm not accusing you of liking the deal or anything. I don't disagree with anything you said. I'm more of just reflecting and speaking generally.

There better be a move for a MI bat to go along with this or it's just flat out stupid.

Maybe he was, but there's still value to that control for another team then, right? This was the best we can do? I hate to sound Cards Talk-ish here, but this is pathetic.
I'm not sure. he probably will earn more through arbitration than he would probably get on the free agent market. Which makes him being under team control a somewhat negative.
It can't be a negative, since there's no rule that you have to tender him an offer of arbitration, and after you release the guy, you can negotiate with him just the same as everyone else.

Unless there's some money changing hands, the Cardinals are paying something like $2-3 million extra for Westbrook over Ludwick. I don't get it.

ETA: And Goold just said they got cash to make up the difference.

How about Nick Greenwood to Cubs, Ted Lilly to LAD, Rafael Furcal to StL

Man I have some issues with this one. We could have gotten way more for Ludwick this offseason. I don't have issues with letting Jay play RF, as I think he brings a lot to the table; it's trading Ludwick for a mediocre starter and a fringe prospect that bothers me. Maybe this means they have something else in the works. They're saving a lot of money by dumping Luddy's salary and presumably having most of Westbrook's salary paid for, so maybe they're planning on taking on some other team's salary dump.

Does Mozeliak have family working in the Padres organization? I'm having trouble making sense out of this.

I don't see how anyone could like the deal. It's neato mosquito to have Westbrook and they might be better in 2010 but it's predicated on Jay and Craig (i.e. it isn't likely). I like dealing Luddy just fine but you need a hell of a lot more than Evan MacLane's brain damaged brother to make it worthwhile.

See, this deal might make sense if we were strapped for cash and couldn't take on more salary, but... whoa boy, I'm opening Pandora's Box by going this route.
