I don't have time to read the thread, but I don't get this at all. A 125 OPS+ outfielder with good defense for a 5.00 ERA pitcher. [expletive] Mozeliak.
Ludwick has a career OPS+ of 117 and Westbrook has a career ERA of 4.34. Why this irrestible urge to make Ludwick out to be more than he is and Westbrook less than he is? Why the failure to account for the ERA drop of a half-run or so we can probably expect when Westbrook gets to pitch to NL hitters? Why the dead certainty that Jay, or a Jay/Craig platoon, can't reproduce an .830 OPS in right field?
Ludwick has had a 123 OPS+ over the last 4 seasons, .857 OPS and was under team control for another season. Jon Jay's best OPS in a full season was .845 in AA. Westbrook has a 102 ERA+ over his last 4 seasons, is only under contract for 10-12 more starts, currently sports and OPS+ of 85 and is only about 4 months ahead of Garcia with his Tommy John surgery.

I like Westrbook and think he's a valuable addition, but this is a lateral move and that is only if Westbrook pitches well.

If Jay or Jay/Craig can approach an .830 OPS and Westbrook outpitches Suppworth, this is in no way a lateral move.

Dunno. Maybe we can take the $15 million or so that come off the books with Penny and Ludwick and get us a great starting pitcher.

But this is July 31, 2010, and there's a race to be won.

Just in case anyone is interested - Folks here have a good perspective on this whole thing. Might be helpful for some.

and with Ryan and Schumaker as our keystone combo and a very light hitting catcher. It will be a miracle

I don't think winning with Pujols, Holiday, Rasmus, Freese is a miracle. That's better than most teams. Hard? Yes. Miracle though??

We're not the yankees, but we're not the Giants, either..
I hope Freese comes back and is an .800 OPS third baseman as much as the next guy, but he's a 27-year-old rookie who hasn't played in a month and had one extra-base hit in June.
