DENVER -- Los Angeles Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez is headed to the Chicago White Sox on Monday in what is looking like a straight waiver claim, a league source with knowledge of the situation said Sunday on condition of anonymity.

The source said there was still some chance the two clubs will work out a trade that presumably would involve one from a list of a handful of prospects going from the White Sox to the Dodgers, a development that probably would mean the Dodgers would pay some percentage of the $3.825 million remaining on Ramirez's two-year, $45 million contract, depending on the quality of the prospect.

yeah, and he was a .881 OPS hitter last season after the suspension and he's hitting .915 this season. I'd still take that sort of offensive production, and seems pretty much in line with the decline of an offensive hitter of his caliber.

We'd also point out that a .915 OPS this year, were Manny healthy enough to qualify for league-leader stuff, would rank him 9th in all of baseball, and that that is pretty good for a guy 38 years old having trouble staying on the diamond, playing in the pitching-laden AL West in parks like the very-pitcher-friendly Petco and the neutral Dodger Stadium.

From the contract, as someone mentioned in another thread:

if Ramirez does not opt out, he receives $5M in 2010 and $15M in 3 installments of $3,333,333 each on June 30, 2011 and 2012, and $8,333,333 on June 30, 2013

If it's a straight waiver claim, the Dodgers lose the contract and get no compensation. The White Sox don't have to give up compensation, but they get Ramirez's contract and all that goes with it. So since the Sox now hold the contract, aren't they on the hook for those deferred payments?

Well, you can always draw your own conclusion. You can observe how Manny hasn't hit as well since the suspension and hasn't been nearly as healthy since the suspension, and you can decide that 1) it's the result of him no longer trying to get pregnant or 2) it's a coincidence.
