Pardon me for asking the obvious but when these types of trades are made you are basically trading your guy, Wallace, for 1/2 year of their guy,Holliday, and a supplemental first round pick, right?omaha_red wrote:please say no.. please say no..Cards Still Have Interest In Matt Holliday

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle hears that the Cardinals might be readying themselves to part with prospect Brett Wallace for Matt Holliday. The Cardinals need a bat to protect Albert Pujols and Holliday has a .310/.416/.492 line since May 5th despite a well-documented drop in power. He's walked 41 times in that span and continues to play above average defense in left field.
Holliday makes $13.5MM this year and will likely be a Type A free agent after the season. Wallace is a top prospect, playing in the upper minors with an OPS over .800 in his first full season of pro ball. Washington outfielder Josh Willingham is an option for the Cards in case Holliday costs too much money and too many prospects.

Re: Alternative to Matt Holliday: Josh Willingham?
Being a type A, if somebody else signs him after we offer him arbitration, we'd get their 1st round pick, and a supplemental pick in between the 1st and 2nd round... I just doubt we could find as pure of a hitter again in next year's draft.lukethedrifter wrote:Pardon me for asking the obvious but when these types of trades are made you are basically trading your guy, Wallace, for 1/2 year of their guy,Holliday, and a supplemental first round pick, right?omaha_red wrote:please say no.. please say no..Cards Still Have Interest In Matt Holliday

If a team doesn't offer arb they get nothing? If they do, they get both picks? What if player agrees to arbitration? Now I'm confused.cards2468 wrote:Being a type A, if somebody else signs him after we offer him arbitration, we'd get their 1st round pick, and a supplemental pick in between the 1st and 2nd round... I've gone back and forth on Wallace for Holliday.
Yes, Wallace is a top prospect, but he could end being a one trick pony (solid average/OBP). While Holliday may be more well rounded, he may not be truly elite outside Coors. IF the Cards can make that trade straight up(maybe a couple fringe prospects too), I'd be OK, as long as Holliday is signed to an extension that's based on reality, not Coors Field. Say, 5 years, $75 million. W/ Boras as his agent, that doesn't seem too likely.

Re: Alternative to Matt Holliday: Josh Willingham?
If we don't offer arbitration, we get nothing. If we do, we risk Holliday accepting. If he accepts, he'll likely get a slight pay increase from the previous year's salary. The Cardinals have refused to offer arbitration to players in the past out of fear that the player would accept. Once a player is offered arbitration, teams become less interested because they don't want to give up their first round pick, however, if a team that has a pick in the top 15 for the upcoming draft signs the type-A free agent who was offered arbitration, the previous team (us), would get their 2nd round instead of their 1st round pick.lukethedrifter wrote:If a team doesn't offer arb they get nothing? I'd like to grab Willingham too. I think it's funny that he has 12hr and only 26rbi. Oh the joys of playing in Washington. Put him in the 4th or 5th spot in the Cards lineup so he can up that rbi total.

Yeah that's not fair I think he's confused. Beane is definitely trying to impersonate Ricciardi and saying that they'll trade Holliday for Wallace. Not cool Beane.cards2468 wrote:No Mo, HALLADAY, not Holliday! That's who we'd give up Wallace for!omaha_red wrote:please say no.. please say no..Cards Still Have Interest In Matt Holliday

Seriously if it takes Wallace to get Holliday, I'd be happy with just going after Willingham.

Re: Alternative to Matt Holliday: Josh Willingham?
I'm beginning to change my tune on these trade situations.
I don't think Holliday is worth giving up Wallace if you look at it in that vacuum.
I think giving up Wallace might be worth Holliday for half a year plus the 2 picks, though. As odd as it sounds, it might help improve organizational depth a little bit, depending on who else is included with Wallace in the deal. If we can grab two legit 1st round types in next year's draft essentially in exchange for Wallace (which is what the deal will be after Holliday leaves in the offseason) then I don't think you're coming out bad at all.
I would worry, though, that they would acquire Holliday and then sign him to a bad contract, thus negating the picks. In that case I wouldn't be in favor of the deal unless the Holliday contract is a bargain.

Re: Alternative to Matt Holliday: Josh Willingham?
It's always come down to affordability for me. Can we afford to sign Holliday to an extension, still sign Pujols, and field a team competitive for a World Series? If the answer to all three of those questions is yes, then I'm for it even if it means losing The Walrus. Ludwick, Rasmus, and Holliday would be a very attractive outfield offensive supplement to Albert. The only question then is...who the hell plays 3B next year...resign DeRosa? Bring up a couple young arms for the #4/#5 spots in the rotation and pray for rain after Carp, Waino, and Lohse pitch.
I should add that if we're sending Wallace to the A's, we'd better not have to send another big name prospect.
