that's what I'm thinking also, but IIRC, his 3 year contract starts when he starts playing in the AHL

so not sure if they want start that clock already as he was the youngest in the draft; only a few days of having to wait till next year to be in the draft? so if he spends a couple years in the AHL, we'd only have him in the NHL for 1 season and already have to sign him to another contract.

Unless things have changed in the offseason, he could've also played in the AHL without burning ELC years as well due to what was called the Entry Level Slide rule. If the player doesn't turn 20 by the end of the calendar year the ELC slides a year so long as they don't play 10 games in the NHL (regular season + postseason combined). It doesn't look like it matters since they sent him to the CHL, but maybe next year if they feel like he's progressed well and there isn't much more for him to learn at the CHL level and he doesn't make it on the NHL roster they'll send him to the AHL.
