I love McCarver's quote about Gibson.

It's something like... "Bob Gibson is the luckiest pitcher I've ever seen. He's always pitching when the other team doesn't score any runs."

Another story about McCarver and Gibby:

McCarver spoke at the HoF when Carlton was inducted (naturally) and during his remarks, he said something like "Steve had the best slider I've ever caught, or even seen." After the address was over, he sees Gibby coming up from the back towards him looking pissed off. Gibby gets up there and says "You mean, the best left handed slider you ever seen."

I'm glad someone pointed this out.

Frankly, if you've ever pitched, it's impossible to not love Gibson. He- along with a few others- personifies what pitching is all about.

Curt Flood's quote is similar - reflecting on Gibson's winning record, he told Gibby, "Big deal - anyone can win when the other team isn't scoring."

FWIW, I have seen the Gibson-to-McCarver line ("all you know about pitching is that you can't hit it") attributed to any number of pitcher/catcher combos; I remember that line being used in Garagiola's first book ("Baseball is a Funny Game"), published in 1960.
