A poster over on BTF says:

Meche looked GREAT. He worked very Ben Sheetsy... All of his pitchers were working, he hung a couple curves but they were out of the zone. He benifited from a big strikezone, but Schilling couldn't benifit from the same zone. He changed speeds, worked both sized of the plate and really had some gittup on his fastball.

Another commented that he was able to keep his fastball low in the zone.

Change speeds, throw strikes, throw to the sides and bottom of the zone...that's a recipe for success.

He's always had a good arm. For all the flack the Royals took (and a lot of it, deservedly so), Dayton Moore is no moron. It's a prime instance of what a guy with a good arm is capable of.

I was very impressed with Meche yesterday. Very impressed. He had great stuff and great command. Looked every bit like a top of the rotation pitcher. Fastball was a lot quicker than the gun suggested, and he put it in impossible-to-hit spots all day.

I can't fathom a universe where Gil Friggin' Meche becomes a top starter in MLB.

Is Gil Meche overpaid? Of course.

Did the Royals have to overpay in order to get any sort of decent to good free agent to sign with them? Probably.

By the way, I hope they are going to be more careful with King Felix than 111 pitches on opening day seems to suggest . . . . really should have been out of there after SEA scored 4 in the 6th to give him the lead . . . he does NOT need to go sit next to Nelson Liriano on the "superstar with unlimited potential sidelined by arm injury" bench. Yes, all pitchers are at risk of injury blah blah blah -- but why do you have a 20-year old throwing 110+ pitches on April 2 with a 4-run lead???

Taking him out of the 6th would be babying him. 111 is maybe a little high but they were easy pitches.
