But what about guys like Tomko? Was he a "failed project" or did he just not buy into the system?

I agree 100% Dunc is the real deal. Year after year he has taken a nomad pitcher and turned them into the next best thing. He doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves. People clamor over Leo Mazzone but come one, really how hard is it to be the pitching coach of Maddux, Smotlz, Glavine. Also how well is he doing in Baltimore?

Dunc deserves bigtime kudos, but let's not go overboard. There is no magic wand.

I'm not sure that heist will ever happen again. It seems that GMs around the league have wised up after reading Moneyball and it'll take an organizational shift to developing talent within (which is already happening) for us to continue the kind of success Cardinal Nation has become used to.

For example, who besides Pat Burrell could you see Jocketty pulling off a trade for peanuts for more than a season? Around the league, there are fewer trades, period, as teams get more used to keeping what they have instead of seeing guys do better with other teams.
IIRC, both Edmonds and Rolen were in their walk years when we got them.

It's not all Glavine, Maddux, and Smoltz. Remove them and the effect is still very real.
