I think the magic number is 162 to tie at the start of the season. Your magic number might go up by 2 in one game, but it starts at 162.

According to this site each team starts the season with a magic number of 163, makes sense to me.

Well. The magic number is between you and a specific team. The total number of your own wins plus the other team's losses that will clinch you a better record than that team.

So. If you win 82 games and the other team loses 81 games, you have it clinched, because the worst you could do is 82-80 and the best they can do is 81-81. So the magic number at the start of the season is 82+81=163.

Cards have won 5 games. Reds have lost 4 games. 5+4=9. 163-9=154.

Our magic number vs the Reds is 154.
