Because that is web design etiquette.
The general rule of thumb is that you keep everything to one window, unless you're linking off-site, or you want a small window of a fixed size to open up (eg: a video player, or something like MLB Gameday). I don't know, maybe design standards have changed, but that's always been the general consensus that I've got.
Just hold CTRL while clicking a link.

It is just design etiquette to keep everything to one window, however, most businesses link to outside sites in a new window so they can retain the visitors that got to their site in the first place. On a forum site such as this, it would be completely acceptable to open external links in a new window and would likely be easier for all users.

And might I add, as a user, I would find it to be more conducive to my needs, therefore, more "etiquetty".
Seriously, I'm so used to clicking on a link on most forums and having a new window, that when I do it here and it's the same window, I end up muttering under my breath, clicking the back arrow, then right clicking and selecting "open in new window". I'm always just peeved that I didn't remember I had to do this in the first place, since at most forums I don't.

Yeah, I agree, this is something I need to do. There's several things I need to do on the backend first then I'll tackle this.
