Great pics, Jack. I had no idea Illinois had anything that beautiful.

I didn't either, until I started exploring down there. The area was once a broad river emptying into a shallow sea. The sandy bottom eventually turned to stone, and then the land uplifted. What remains is a series of sandstone ridges that run over a hundred miles. These create the bluffs, waterfalls, and overhangs you see in the pics. The waterfalls are seasonal, but can be spectacular in the spring. And climbers at SIU love the bluffs in Giant City and in a place called Jackson Hollow.
