Scary movies.. ?

#1 The Thing - the early 80's one with Kurt Russell, a little campy now but still good.
#4 The Ring
#10 Audition - very good

#16 Jacob's Ladder - gave me nightmares after watching it years ago.

I think The Blair Witch Project gets a bad rap. Watching it now, yeah, not very scary. But, I went to see it at some little "art house" theater in Chicago on the night it came out and before any real publicity. It scared the [expletive] out of me because you really weren't sure what may have been real footage. You have to remember this was at a time before everyone was connected to the internet at all times and knew everything about everything.

Along those lines, they had an awesome viral campaign for it on teh interwebs the week or month before it came out. The week it came out, my friend came up to me and said "Hey, check this out", sending me to the viral site. We were both pretty sure it was bull [expletive] but also both really wanted to see the movie. And did, on opening night at midnight.

I definitely agree with the idea that it ages poorly, which is unfortunate.

I saw Blair Witch on video - so I knew all about it. Thought it was good - lost in the woods with something unseen and evil lurking - taps into the primal fear. I haven't seen it in many years though.

The Ring scared the hell out of me when I first saw it. I was pretty young at the time, but it still creeps me out.

The Sixth Sense...I liked it but don't know if it was scary or I was more 'What the hell is going on?'. Amytiville 3d wasn't good, but there is a scene that creeps me out to this day. The First Power was one that I liked, and one called Spellbinder (which I believe had that Tawny chick in it for a Cards connection). Never mind on the Tawny thing, I was wrong there. What is that one...the Haunting or something with Zeta-Jones? Dumb but she is hot as hell.

How could a children's movie sneak onto this list, you ask? What about the Oompa Loompas? What about all the whimsical sets and family-friendly ending? Apparently you haven't seen this 1971 film in a while. The scene on the freaky ferry boat is ridiculously scary — especially if you are a kid.

I'm bumping this old thread because of an experience last night. My wife has a couple girlfriends end for the weekend and they are doing their typical eat [expletive] food, and watch movies thing. Last night when I walked in they were watching War of the Worlds. The Tom Cruise one. I had completely forgotten about it until last night. That movie gave me PTSD when I saw it and last night kind of triggered it.

To explain further we went to see it in the theater when it was new. Didn't bother me at the time, however the next day we started wheat harvest and the sound that the tripods in the movie make while picking up the people I swear is the exact sound of the John Deere 9610 combine harvesting wheat. So that next day when we fired up the combine I had this really weird response and got really scared and paranoid. That was a really rough wheat harvest and I struggled to sleep. So much so that I ended up staying at my parents "to be closer to the farm" but really so I could sleep on their couch and be close to them. Probably a silly reaction for a grown adult looking back but for a good week or so I really struggled hard for some reason.

Anyway the girls watching it last night brought back all those memories. I went down to my workshop and turned some music on really quickly as to not relive it.

Anyone else have any experiences like that?

I have F'd up movies that stay with me a while. Not to your extent though. Longlegs is a recent example of one that did that to me. Thought about it for days.
