RUGBY, when played well, resembles soccer more than American football. It is basically a chess game of ball possession and field position, and you'll often trade one for another. The key in moving the ball is to create mistmatches, typically on the wings, between the number of offenders and defenders. Thus the passing of the ball back and forth quickly.

football + futbol = RUGBY

RUGBY is the ultimate team sport, IMO. RUGBY sevens allows for a bit more individuality because of the open play, but neither game is one where an individual can really dominate.

HJ is correct. Rugby and soccer were the same sport. The sport started as a pastime for English school boys. Eventually it proliferated and two codes of one sport evolved. It was called football. Eventually each school started playing a slightly different variation of the sport. Some you could use your hands but not run with it, some no hands and so forth until finally one school called Rugby wrote a codified set of rules that allowed you to not only handle the ball but run forward with it. The other schools participated in the sport, but it branched off from football which was itself codified into the sport it is today. The school boys that grew up to be factory workers, black smiths, workers in the Royal Arsenal etc formed amateur teams which were sponsored by the companies they worked for. As crowds came and revenues flowed in, it became professional and thus the beautiful game and it's rougher brother, Rugby.

Until my 16-mile, 12 hour jaunt up 5,000 ft to the top of Longs Peak via the Loft Route last summer, the most demanding sporty thing I had ever done was 80 minutes of RUGBY. The tackling, shoving, and pushing isn't too bad, but it's the endless intervals of sprints that wear you out.
