Roger Staubach did not begin the season as a starter until he was 30 years old in 1972. After fulfilling his Naval required service he signed with the Cowboys in '69 and spent his first three seasons backing up or alternating with Craig Morton.
Did not realize that.

43:00 great punt return by Mizzou great -Johnny Roland.

And Dan Reeves at running back ?

Agree. Werhli is playing HOF level in this game.

And more seven degrees of --I am old enough to remember a crusty old Craig Morton with the Broncos later on. He retired year before John Elway arrived. Was on my first vacation trip to Colorado in 1983 - and it was preseason and already everything was John Elway this and Elway that.

and about those goal posts in the endzone. That meant they were taking field goal attempts from near midfield and beyond.

Chuck Howley was named Super Bowl MVP for Super Bowl V, intercepting two passes and recovering a fumble in the Cowboys 16-13 loss to the Colts. It was the first time that a defensive player received the honor; to this day, it is the only time a player from the losing team has ever won the award.

Damn, what a TD saving tackle by Jim Hart on an interception return. Cornell Green should be ashamed.

Lots of boos for the Cowboys.

Okay, this is really fascinating to me. Only sort of related, Dave Meggyesy retired as a linebacker from the Cardinals after the 1969 season then wrote Out of Their League
Dave Meggyesy had been an outside linebacker with the St. Louis Cardinals for seven years when he quit at the height of his career to tell about the dehumanizing side of the game—about the fraud and the payoffs, the racism, drug abuse, and incredible violence. The original publication of Out of Their League shocked readers and provoked the outraged response that rocked the sports world in the 1970s. But his memoir is also a moving description of a man who struggled for social justice and personal liberation. Meggyesy has continued this journey and remains an active champion for players’ rights through his work with the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). He provides a preface for this Bison Books edition.
Pimping the book on the Dick Cavett Show. Janis Joplin cameo appearance- non singing.

This was the Big Red's third straight shutout. First time since the 1935 Giants did it.

Wehrli has the better of Bullet Bob Hayes.

Jim Hart -a master of the seven step drop, does it in a blink.

And the run blocking -seem light years ahead of what I am accustomed to seeing in current Rams games, and NFL in general.
I wonder how much of it is my imagination, versus the evolution of lineman to pass blockers, versus lineman today being fat tubs of goo.

2nd half

Wherli has distinct Willie McGee-ish nervous/shy mannerism. Makes a play then aw-shucks around, pulls up his britches adjusts thigh pads, straightens shoulder pads.

textbook pick at 1:29:10
