Are the Wild Cards now a trap?
What are the implications for trade deadline deals? Since we know the real financial payoff for a team’s performance results from a run through the postseason—the deeper the run, the richer the pot of gold—teams will need to shift their mindset to not treat all postseason qualifying positions as “equal”. In the new system, it may make more sense to fortify your ballclub when your playoff status is assured, but being anointed a division winner is still in question—think Texas or even the Angels. However, a team fighting for a wild card berth should think twice before they go all-in for the privilege of potentially extending their season for one more day. This is the exact opposite of the old mindset—do everything you can to qualify for the playoffs, but don’t worry too much about winning the division.
I tend to agree - the real buyers now will be the ones trying to win a division rather than taking a coin toss on a 1 game wild card playoff. So I don't know if the new Wild Card will actually result in more buyers or not. Maybe a few more buys, but different types of buyers. The Braves fit the mold of a team trying to win their division, for sure.

Sveum says Dempster could get traded at some point, but earlier reports about done deal to Braves are wrong.

#Cubs assistant GM Randy Bush says more than once: "There is nothing to report."

@BleacherNation Front office respects Sveum's evaluation skills and has generally kept him in the loop, though not at Twitter-speed.

Sveum sets "impossible odds" that #Cubs pitchers Dempster, Garza and Maholm are all traded before deadline.

Is it possible that the Braves’ demands and not Ryan Dempster’s are holding up his trade from the Chicago Cubs to Atlanta?

Yes, and here’s how, based on what I know, and also upon my own speculation:

Dempster, as a player with 10 years of major-league service, the last five with the same team, has the right to veto any trade. He also can ask for a contract extension or some other financial inducement in exchange for waiving his no-trade rights.
A Dempster trade from the Cubs to the Braves likely would involve a significant amount of cash going to Atlanta to cover the remaining portion of Dempster’s salary. In exchange, the Cubs would want a better prospect – reportedly, Braves right-hander Randall Delgado. And the Braves, to give up a better prospect, might want Dempster for more than the final two months of the season.

Dempster likes the Braves – they are his second choice for a trade destination after the Dodgers, sources say. But that doesn’t necessarily mean he would want to sign an extension to remain in Atlanta. His long-term preference, according to one source, is to join a team that trains in Arizona. The Braves train in Florida.

I don’t know that the above scenario actually is taking place. I just know that this is one possible explanation for the holdup in this trade.

Cubs back talking to Dodgers about Dempster; Braves deal on hold

By Jon Heyman | Baseball Insider

The Cubs have re-engaged the Dodgers in trade talk involving Ryan Dempster since Dempster has not yet accepted a deal to the Braves, sources tell CBSSports.com.

The Cubs and Braves had agreed on a trade to send Dempster to Atlanta for pitching prospect Randall Delgado, but Dempster has 10-and-5 veto rights and has yet to agree to go to the Braves, leaving the Cubs with little choice to consider the original first option -- the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Sources say Dempster has told people he would approve a trade to the Dodgers. It was originally thought Dempster would OK the Braves as well, as they were believed to be his "second'' choice. However, with him not giving his approval more than a day after the trade was consummated, ythe Cubs may be forced to try to forge a trade with the Dodgers.

The Cubs liked the Braves deal and were believed not overly enamored with the Dodgers original offer. Los Angeles does have some very good pitching prospects, but apparently they weren't showing a willingness to surrender the best of them for a rental.

Dempster told the Cicgao media he was still thinking about the Braves option, and it's possible if the Cubs can't forge a trade with the Dodgers he may have to think even harder about it. But Cubs people also realize it might be easier just to make their best deal with the Dodgers.

The Dempster stalemate - and why it's bad for the Cubs
by KenRosenthal

The Chicago Cubs are running out of desirable choices as they seek to move right-hander Ryan Dempster.

The team had a trade in place to send Dempster to the Atlanta Braves, but the pitcher does not want to go to Atlanta, according to major-league sources – and, as a player with 10 years of service, the last five with the same team, he has the right to reject any deal.

Dempster’s preference is the Los Angeles Dodgers, sources say, but the Cubs and Dodgers have been unable to settle a trade.

The Cubs’ only other option is to keep Dempster for the rest of the season and then make him a one-year offer for around $12 million to qualify for draft-pick compensation if he leaves as a free agent.

But even that possibility comes with a trap door.

Dempster, 35, could accept the Cubs’ offer, sticking the team with a $12 million veteran at a time when it is trying to assemble as many young pieces as possible.

For that reason, one rival executive says there is “no way” that the Cubs would make such an offer. Under the new collective-bargaining agreement, they would receive only one draft pick. That pick would be a supplemental choice between the first and second rounds.

TM54 made a pretty good point on his blog about the Cubs and what their options are re:Dempster. If Dempster is only willing to go to the Dodgers, and the Dodgers won't give up Lee for him, then the cubs should go ahead and send Garza - who the dodgers will apparently deal Lee for - to LA and then re-approach Dempster. Tell him his options are to go to ATL or stay with the team the rest of the year.

Which he'd be fine with doing, probably.
