Smart. What do conversations like that ever accomplish?
When the other person has the maturity of an adult, and not an 8 year old, political discussions are the most fun to have. Same with religious conversations. Unfortunately, most people are idiots who are incapable of civil discourse.
I dunno...it's not like one is going to convert one's friend of diametrically opposite views. But one could always piss that friend off.
Why in the world should the purpose of conversation be to generate conversions? Probably the majority of conversations I have, certainly on here, have no particular goal at all. Is the point of baseball discussions to convert others to some particular view of the Cardinals or of what they should do? What would it matter even if you did? I assume we talk about these things because it is something we care about and find interesting.

One of the things I noticed with all three friends was a ramping up of the flaming after any attempt to move to a common ground. I am rather old school in that I like to talk things out with people who have opposing views in the hope of learning something new.

I don't hope to convert anyone to my view since I consider my 'view' to be a constantly evolving one.

I recently cut off a 'friend' who wouldn't quit sending crap like this - all of which he thought were good for a laugh.

Spoilered because I find them offensive rather than funny.

This one was accompanied by the story of a man who complimented this lady on her 3 beautiful children and then said "how was I to know?".

I think all of those images are hilarious, but probably for very different reasons than the people who created them. They remind me of the Dave Chappelle joke about something that is so racist you can't even believe it's happening.

The first one is good for a laugh, if only because it should be spelled "Mormon."

Actually, I think a lot of the baseball discussion I've read over the past years is somewhat similar to political discussion in which identical arguments are ubiquitous, down to using the exact same key words. I've gotten to where I hate hearing any argument, sports or politics, that does not give at least some recognition to the original source. And I do think a lot of the baseball conversation, especially when concerning advanced metrics, is intended to convert to some extent.

I had some Liberal friends once, but they all committed suicide.

The burden of white guilt can do that to a man.
