I'm sure it will make this bat more valuable.

Re: Did Mantle cork his bat?
I am new here (so please take it easy on me!) and I was looking through the topics and found this one.
What is interesting to me is that corking a wooden bat doesn't do anything to enhance performance. It is technically cheating because of the alteration to the bat that occurs; however, the hitter gains no competitive edge from corking his bather than removing some of the weight of the bat from the barrel...same principle as the cut-out on the top of many bats. But there is no trampoline effect...the cork is functional only to absorb the sound of a partially "hollow" bat.
I'm sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but as I said I'm new here.

Re: Did Mantle cork his bat?
Depends on what your definition of performance enhancement entails. It doesn't help you hit the ball farther, no. The trampoline effect is reduced by the loss of mass but that is at least offset by the increase in bat speed. It reduces weight and shifts the center of mass while still allowing you the benefit of using a longer bat than would be typical for the weight. Sammy Sosa's bat was cupped and corked on top of that. Even if you can't hit it farther, you can wait longer to swing which is a big advantage.Cuellar 35 wrote:What is interesting to me is that corking a wooden bat doesn't do anything to enhance performance.
