I'm not sure what that is, but you have to evaluate it and come up with a number and then shoot for it. That's for Mo to decide.Jmodene wrote:What, though, is the right price? He's making, what? 13-14MM this season?

Re: Beltran
I feel like an idiot posting this after Jay hit the homer.......... but I was thinking it earlier.
I think far too many are dismissing Jon Jay too easily. He was a 3.7 WAR player last year (in only 117 games), and 2.5 the year before that. Yes, he's off to a rough start in 2013, but it's not fair to pretend that he hasn't been an outstanding CF'er the last 2 years.
Anyway, the point is that the Cardinals are in a good position (as many of you have already stated), in that they have several different good options.

Re: Beltran
Well the Cardinals have the remained of this year to determine if Jay is good enough as a starting OF and if he turns things around they can save a lot of money by not going after Beltran.

Re: Beltran
They could also save money if it turns out Tavares *can* play CF... allowing Craig to move to right and Adams to play first.JoeMcKim wrote:Well the Cardinals have the remained of this year to determine if Jay is good enough as a starting OF and if he turns things around they can save a lot of money by not going after Beltran.

Re: Beltran
If all of Jay, Tavares, Adams and Craig stay healthy (and Tavares continues to mature), then I'm not sure you can afford to bring him back. I think it's way too premature to consider, but he's certainly the kind of player you love to have on the team.
Sometimes it all works itself out. Good problem to have.

I always knew how good of a player Beltran was but now seeing him day in and day out I *appreciate* how good of a player he is.

Just think if we had him when he was GG caliber in CF.jim wrote:I always knew how good of a player Beltran was but now seeing him day in and day out I *appreciate* how good of a player he is.
Also, for me, he's not a bad guy to have around when Tavares comes up.

Re: Beltran
But would he want to be a part time player at a part-timer's salary, or would he go over to the AL like Berkman and get paid seven figures to DH?BW23 wrote:Just think if we had him when he was GG caliber in CF.jim wrote:I always knew how good of a player Beltran was but now seeing him day in and day out I *appreciate* how good of a player he is.

Re: Beltran
He'll get full-time player salary, if he's healthy. And he should.
As for mentoring Tavares, I'm thinking more of Jay being gone at that point.
