Not knowing what putting # in front of something means - first world problem.

it's twitter, right? but what's it for?

From what I understand, you can search for that tag and see every other time it has been referenced. So it's kind of like starting a thread on a particular topic. For example, a local radio station runs contests on twitter for the best/funniest comment on a particular subject every day. They have a hashtag they give out and you have to put it at the end of your entry. They can then search for that hashtag and see all the entries in one place and pick the winner.

Actually, that part is awesome. The hashtags make it really easy for people to search a topic and see what everyone is saying. I'll do that a lot.

It's the fact that now people put them in emails and everyday correspondence as a way to add emphasis or something that I don't understand. It's [expletive] annoying.

Since I don't tweet, do the facebook, send the electronic mails or link in with anyone I don't give a rats ass about hash tags or at signs or anything else like that.
