My friend's dad is in his early 50's and already showing signs of it. That's gotta be especially difficult to deal with.

Talked to my mom last night, and it sounds like my grandma's dementia is starting to get problematic. Fortunately (?) she is already in assisted living due to a long recovery from a hip break and has decided to stay, so that battle has been avoided, but now the worry is about finances. Apparently, she is in regular contact with some kind of "stockbroker" with whom she is making "investments." So, huge red flag. Someone in their mid 80s with a guaranteed pension and who is not loaded probably shouldn't have any money in investments that carry any significant risk much less be making deals with some shady broker dude. I think control over the management of savings needs to be taken away, but I'm not sure how that is done exactly.

You might consult an elder law specialist or a lawyer who specializes in estates and powers of attorney. Right now, since your grandmother is in assisted living, she's probably not spending down her assets too rapidly, but she may need to take steps to protect assets and be put on Medicaid, since she may be in skilled nursing soon, and will be spending $5000 to $6000 a month more than she currently is. (The term "assisted living" has different meanings in different states.) It doesn't sound like your grandmother has general or medical power-of-attorney documents in place, though. Does one of her children live nearby? And does your grandmother trust him or her enough to grant that person some control over assets and other issues? If she does Medicaid planning NOW, things will be a lot easier financially for everyone.

Boy, it's tough to read past that first part where he recognized the fight song and sings it. Watching AW jr starting to put things together, I can really relate to wonderingis he there? does he understand this? but it is beyond sad to think of it in a sense where the connections are getting fewer and further between and the future is worse.

And now he got kicked out because of his combativeness. Great huh? Then to compound things we go check out other facilities and they go on and on about how they do things differently and how they can take him only to call back and break my moms heart.

The combativeness can be dealt with if the psychiatrist has a clue. There is a problem using certain meds because the fda has warnings about infinitesimally higher risks of having a stroke so the pharmacists use that to get in the way and they scare the nurses. That's why you need a good doctor and a facility that is comfortable with the issues. The government just wants everyone like that to go on hospice and die.

Sorry man. That's got to be awful.

He was on seroquel for a bit but then fell five times in less than a month culminating with the one that cracked a rib and fractured a transverse process.
