I'll say "Thanks!" at the end of my replies or if I ask questions. Very rarely will I ONLY reply with a thanks. And when I do, it's only to the person that gave me the [expletive] I needed.

I've had a real eye-opener about work emails in the last two years. We have this complete [expletive] poopheel mother [expletive] who is awkward as hell. His tone in emails and in person is pure garbage. He wouldn't use a pleasantry if it saved his life. And now, we have this flood of clients who have interacted with him who flat-out refuse to work with him on projects, and some of them won't even work with my department at all. It all starts with his tone. They see him as a rude, condescending, insulting ass. Granted, he follows up his poor tone in emails with equally poor tone in person. But a few niceties would go a long way. Never underestimate the power of a simple please or thank you.

Not that I think any of that is pertinent to what gobirds is talking about. 10 people mass-emailing one another with one line "Thanks!" is stupid and irritating.

We have an internal IM system and I use it as often as possible in place of phone calls or emails just to avoid as much annoying crap as I can.

My work email is not bad. But it must be so bad for others, that it has [expletive] ruined non-work email.

case in point - a group I was treasurer for. I'd send a financial and very brief summary by email. Stupid dumbasses don't read their emails and when we'd have an inefficient long-ass meeting in person, they'd ask all the questions I'd already answered on email

I had the same exact issue with a group I'm part of outside of work. I explained how I already fixed something on our web site in an email. They didn't read it and then spent 5 hours trying to fix it a different way, not realizing it was already fixed.

Another time they sent out an email complaining we were setting up the meeting too late and they needed to get the info out on the web site and Facebook....I forwarded them 2 emails I had already sent a couple weeks earlier with all that info. Drives me nuts.

Any emails directly related to projects that I'm working on I make sure to read in great detail. The ones I am bad about skimming through and missing stuff in would be the generic emails that go out to the whole workplace about general things...Like some online training we need to take, or don't park in the North lot next week, or the servers will be down Saturday, etc...

But yeah, I never just send an email that says "Thanks!" unless it is to 1 person who just did me a big favor. We also have an instant-messaging thing here internally, which is great for short messages like "Thanks!"

Getting IM pings throughout the day is pretty annoying too. It's easier to ignore emails.

Slightly related, my work pet peeve is when someone types up some big stupid email either with lots of info or questions, and they work down the hall from me. Get up off your fat ass and come see me, spend 3 minutes talking about it, and save yourself all of the time and trouble of the email.

I receive or get copied averaging about 150 emails per day, also have to deal with IM's.
All this while I work on CRM's in an SAP system.
Almost makes me dread my vacations, knowing I have to deal with my inbox when I get back.

I'm also in the "get off my ass, walk out of my office to my boss' office and discuss matters" but unfortunately everytime i do, she reminds me that she wants me to email her.

Only, there is one problem with that--she never checks her flipping email!!!! Sometimes there are pressing matters and clicking that exclamation icon when sending an email doesn't get [expletive] done faster.

I wish we had intraoffice instant messaging--i feel like [expletive] would get done faster and things would be more efficient.

Plus, i could ham it up easier with my office bros

People who send me the red exclamation emails have it backfire. Because I make those emails a lesser priority. [expletive] you for telling me how important your email is with your stupid little red exclamation mark.
