This isn't really classical I guess but it's awesome. Dave Matthews and Hugh Laurie on House.

I have always been a fan of the French impressionists Ravel and Debussy, and recently have been exploring more of the French composers. How I managed to go 40+ years only giving a passing listen to Satie I have no idea.

A waltz by Emmanuel Chabrier, a kind of precursor to Ravel and Debussy, and other impressionists.

I went to the Austin Symphony Saturday night and they were doing a retrospective of American composer Samuel Barber. Most impressive was the violin soloist performing the third movement of his violin concerto. It was written for a 12 year old child prodigy, who declared it unplayable.

Here's a grainy video of it:

The third and final movement from the marimba concerto by Erik Ewazen, a very tonal contemporary American composer.

The first movement from Hindemith's symphony, Mathis der Maler (Mathis the painter). Based on music he composed for an opera on this Renaissance painter's life.

I was just listening to a symphonic version of Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante defunte" (Pavane (a type of dance) for a dead princess). I like the piano only versions. Ravel got sick of this piece because of it's popularity, he wrote it when he was young and always wanted to disassociate himself from it but was always being requested to play it. For good reason I think, it's one of those pieces that I probably shouldn't play because of what it does to my mood, but I can't help. It's too sad to listen to, but too beautiful not to.
