As for NIU, isn't it odd how we celebrate all the little Cinderella Directional University schools that get into the basketball tournament but get all pissy when one gets into the BCS?
I was glad to see NIU get the bid - and had more interest in them than the other games on New Years. It's not like it was national championship game -it was meaningless to me, but probably gave some money and exposure to the schools.

Realistically, cinderella in college football by nature -sheer numbers of players - is much different than basketball. Basketball, one player can carry a cinderella in basketball for a while.

Without a playoffs, BCS is all-or-nothing. Grant a bid to a mid-major in basketball, and they have to win (most likely against major competition) to move forward -proving they deserve to be there. That doesn't happen in football.

Exactly, in college football, the bowl matchups determine how interesting the season will be and theoretically, the BCS games should be the biggest matchups. A FSU vs NIU matchup wasn't so great on paper and failed to create a huge atmosphere for one of the more hyped games. Of course, people were down on Louisville/FL and that turned out to be a pretty big surprise.

For March Madness, with so many games, great matchups are all but a certainty. The small schools are taking the place of the like 7th place team of a major conference or something. No one cares. And, really, they typically don't change anything. With NIU taking the place of Oklahoma or whoever, people kind of felt like they got robbed of a potentially good game.

So what happened? An extra point was blocked and recovered in the end zone?

blocked, caught in the field of play by the defense, ran back into the endzone, fumbled, recovered by the defending (non kicking) team and tackled there.

Well that wasn't very bright.

53 years and this is the first I've heard of this. Ha.

I do hope Chip Kelly jumps to the NFL. He's a talented guy who has done great things for the program, and arguably my state, but he's just such a giant, flaming A-Hole (especially when compared to the Beavers' Mike Reilly, who is a Saint). I look forward to the post-Kelly era.
