That's not how MLB payrolls work though, is it?
Sure it is. It's not like there's a cap or a floor. You can save money and spend it later if you want. You can even make money off of that $20m in the meantime.

Has any team ever done this? I'm not sure why it's being argued as a tactic. You can't avoid paying the luxury tax by pointing out how much money you saved in previous seasons.

its not a tactic, its just being frugal. dexter fowler to the cards is the equivalent of spending a sh*tload of money on shiny rims for your busted up buick celebrity.

just save that scrilla and put it towards a new hyundai elantra in a couple years. decent price, good warranty, excellent resale value.

18 million isn't a [expletive]... and again, there is nothing to stop them from Fowler AND a 2018 prize free agent... provided they're still prizes then.

I'm on board with signing Fowler if they add a 3B.

#1 is the Sale trade being nearly done if anyone wonders about the 2.

Blue Jays are offering 4/60. Please beat that.

Cusumano saying the vibe is that Fowler isn't in love with St. Louis.

Goold on Fowler -- "Money isn't the issue. Opt-out years. Age at end of contract. Length of contract" are the deciding factors."
