They shouldn’t sign him so they can save their money to not sign anyone else.
I see no reason to extend Walker right now. He's had two really bad years, two really good months, then 4 OK months. He's not eligible to be a free agent until 2029.

So I think taking another year, or even two, to see if those two months are a flash in the pan or if he has found another gear to help him realize his potential is worth it.

I really want Walker to succeed - I have a signed ball by him that he gave my daughter, so i'll always be a big fan of his - but so far he's shown far more reasons to be hesitant on signing him to a big contract than he has reasons to justify the risk.
There’s always a reason not to sign someone.

In this case, I think there’s some very valid reasons not to extend Walker.

The team saw it fit to extend Wetherholt. So I trust their judgment.

If they don't sign Walker they will just pocket the money

Sign Walker.

Why; he’s not a FA for a long time

He has shown 2 great months total

I’m all for them spending a ton of money, but if it were my money, I’m spending it elsewhere and make Walker prove he’s actually for real

This September he looked exactly like the Walker of old, swinging at crap sliders on the outside every damn time they threw one.

He's shown more than two great months. He actually had 3 great months the last year (150 in April, 156 in May and 138 OPS+ in August) and a good rookie season. Then he had two bad years sandwiched in between, but he did not look like that same player last year. At all. Even during the slump he didn't, imo.

The thing is they are not going to spend the money anywhere else. They're just not. That's not a thing that's going to happen. And he was injured in September, so I throw that all out.

Walker made more for winning the home run derby than he did playing the whole year for the Cardinals.

I am ok with them waiting another year if it means they focus on extending Burleson.

Theoretically, it wouldn’t be as much about what you are paying Walker, it would be committing to him being the plan in RF for the next few years, or however long you extend him. Do you want that, or do you want something more in RF?

Now, a team truly wanting to contend would still be seeking an upgrade in RF, and you could just trade/bench/release Walker if you found it, but we all know the Cardinals would stop looking for an upgrade.
