WTF?

I was hoping that we could send the winning band a championship belt, or maybe a coat made out of human hair that says "GREATEST ROCK BAND: As voted by the esteemed members of GatewayRedbirds.com" on the back.

its still at 0. they both started there. otherwise, they both start at N/A.
So you start out judging a band, team, person, food... without having any knowledge of them? If you're saying 0 has some value as a number (good or bad), you've just giving an entity a value without any knowledge of it.

Do you really start out liking or hating something, and then wait to be proven wrong?
Way to totally twist my words.

0 is not negative or positive. it just is. positive numbers are greater (more) than 0. Negative numbers are less than 0. it's a neutral starting point.
Yeah, but you're not really comparing things in that case. If both entities start at null, and the question is "what entity is liked better", you have to have values for entities. Null, by its very definition, has no value. You can't compare an entity with value against one with no value, it just isn't logical.

If one this is better or worse than the other, that other has to have a value, but you're trying to say the other has "no value". Sorry, but you can't do that.

I don't think there are any songs that have ever really been on the radio by the Clash, or on MTV.

ZZ Top--even if you wanted to avoid them you couldn't in the 80s.
Sorry, I meant that more people know ZZ Top. I fixed my post to reflect that.

You're right. I've said my piece, I won't say any more unless asked to.

:D Happy thoughts :D

last time, man.

The bolded part is NOT the issue. we aren't polling that. you aren't comparing entities. you are stating your level of liking.

which do you like better is not which IS better. we are polling which do you like better. It has nothing to do with actual goodness vs badness as far as bands go, it's more vs less. And there's a difference between the 2.

This is all WAY more complicated than it has to be.

ZZ Top is better than the Clash. It's that simple.

VOTE THAT WAY, FOLKS.

I've never said it was goodness vs badness, I've always used the qualifier "like" in every post I've made. Still, to like something more than something else, you have to value and compare each entity... there's just no getting around that part.

And to be sure, we ARE comparing entities... it's Band A versus Band B, not "please grade a band on a scale from 1-10". Sure, you can use a scale to judge the bands, but eventually, you HAVE to compare the two in order to vote.

You can like A, but you can't like A more than B, without B having a value. And in order for A and B to have a value, you have to have a basic knowledge of each. And that's what we're doing in this tourney - "Who do you like more?" is the question above ever poll.

Well, as I understand it, ZZ Top has a higher VORB (value over replacement band), but The Clash earned more Rock Shares, and had a better Zone Rating.

So I'm torn...

Now vote for ZZ. We need some breathing room. You never know how many more roommates thrill has who he can pay off to vote for The Clash right at the deadline.

Think of it not as a vote for ZZ (even though they deserve it). Think of it as a vote AGAINST abuse of moderator powers.
