My old girl came up lame recently. Her back right leg went from fine in the morning, to completely useless that night. She was safely in her crate while I was at work, too. It's so weird.
Went to the vet. No pain reaction to leg manipulation. X-rays show perfect bone and hip structure (amazing for her age and breed). So the vet thinks it's either soft tissue or nerve related.
It's been almost two weeks now. We have her on a couple different pain medicines. She'll have short spurts where she does put a little weight on it and she hops around with a little vigor. But most days she is really struggling to walk. She still doesn't act like it's hurting her though. And she still eats and drinks plenty. So that's good.
At ~13 years old, I don't think I want to spend thousands on specialty vet bills for more diagnostics that might just tell me she has degenerative nerve issues or something. So we're just trying to keep her as comfortable as possible and monitor how she's doing.

After recovering from her weird leg issue, my dog was back to her old self for nearly a month. It was great to see. She could jump up on the couch, would run around the back yard, get into mischief again, etc.
And then a couple of days ago, she started not wanting to eat, looked unsteady on her feet, didn't get out of bed much. This was different than when her back leg was lame. We kept an eye on her through NYE, and then yesterday, she seemed even worse. She whined any time we would leave her side, but she wouldn't get up to follow us. So I took her into the 24 hour emergency vet clinic. News was not good.
At about 14 years of age, she was showing fluid around her heart on an ultrasound. Based on the description of symptoms, the vet said it was most likely a really aggressive sarcoma. We could try chemo to give her another 6-9 months, but that seemed like it would be more for us than her, and really selfish.
We said our goodbyes and let her go last night.
She was the sweetest asshat ever.

Sorry for your loss, Geddy. We made a similar decision a few yrs ago with Sophie who was going through wild spikes with diabetes. The vet said we could keep bringing her in for shots but it would be expensive for us and wreak havoc with her system.
