Technically, they didn't give out a five-year contract this time either. It's a 3-year deal on top of his existing one. Right? If I'm right, and I haven't been wrong my one time this week yet, then 3-year deals can be insured...as opposed to 4- or 5-year deals.
Granted, they may not have insured his, and the insurance may cost a lot on someone like Carp if they took it. But, if I'm right, I think this is significant in the discussion.

Carps signing lowers the bar for the overpriced ones in my brain. If a couple more GM's woul;d follow suit the could control the market a bit better.
This might be a bigger ripple than anyone knows in the whole of MLB. If it works just a little bit it was worth it, and then you get Carp for 5 more years!

Roy Oswalt signed a 5-year contract, even though the Astros still owned his rights for 2 more years.
His extension, by the way, was 5 years, $73 mil. So it's similar to Carpenter's contract.
Oswalt was signed through next year, not through 2008
The only way it matters is if Carpenter is injured next year. If he's not, his value could go up again.
Oswalt at 5/73 with a 16 million option for the 6th year. Carpenter 5/65 with a 12 million dollar for the 6th year. This is a great contract.
It's a great contract because it was signed a year earlier. Besides Oswalt is younger. I really don't see a major discount here.
Oswalt's contract was signed in a less friendly market (for the players) for one thing. Also, Oswalt's contract is 12-15% more epensive per year (depending on whether neither option is picked up, or both) than the one Carpenter signed. Do you think Oswalt's production is going to average 12-15% over Carpenter's for the duration of the contracts?
I feel better and safer about extending Carp than I did for Izzy & Morris. I don't like the injury argument because you could say that about anyone's contract. meh.
Reality is that we signed Carp to a three year contract two years early:
2009: $16M
2010: $16M
2011: $17M
We extended Carp for less than what Zito and Schmidt will get this season. Good move, and it opens up Jocketty to spend $$$ for starting pitchers as to not hurt anyone's feelings.
The nucleus of Bob Gibson, Stan Musial, and Brooks Robinson....I mean Chris Carpenter, Albert Pujols, and Scott Rolen is intact until 2010 (Rolen comes off the books, I think).

I'm not sure if I like or dislike the extension, to be honest I'm still digesting it. I guess it all depends on the savings they received by getting it done a year earlier. It's certainly interesting.
