They are. I think because love affairs with vampires afford a great opportunity to meditate on the nature of love. This one is an especially good take on the genre. Go see this movie. It's beautiful.
That was really good, although, as usual, I'm sure I missed a lot. I suppose the vampire theme is about establishing a dissonance whereby something horrible is simultaneously sympathetic and a source of deep connection ...?

Transsiberian had a ton of potential. Good cinematography and a great setting for a film with the train and the snow. I actually felt quite a bit of tension and suspense the first 2/3 of the film. Ben Kingsley was awesome as usual. But the ending was just bad.

Mystery piano in woods perplexes police
(CNN) -- Was it a theft? A prank? A roundabout effort to bring some holiday cheer to the police? Authorities in Harwich, Massachusetts, are probing the mysterious appearance of a piano, in good working condition, in the middle of the woods.
Discovered by a woman who was walking a trail, the Baldwin Acrosonic piano, model number 987, is intact -- and, apparently, in tune.
But so far, the investigation is flat.
Also of note: Near the mystery piano -- serial number 733746 -- was a bench, positioned as though someone was about to play.
The piano was at the end of a dirt road, near a walking path to a footbridge in the middle of conservation land near the Cape.
It took a handful of police to move the piano into a vehicle to transport it to storage, so it would appear that putting it into the woods took more than one person.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but I'm watching the Hunter Thompson documentary now. It looks pretty promising.

Saw Milk tonight- dragged a little but very good- highly recommended, Sean Penn could get an Oscar.

It had flaws, but it was entertaining. The good doctor and his wacky antics are always entertaining. It's hurt by the fact that there's so much source material about HST already out there that it really didn't cover any new ground. But I'm a junkie for the HST documentaries. They're an automatic 4 out of 5 for me every time.
EDIT: And you'll note that my new avatar showed up the day after I watched it.

I've watched several movies over the holiday:
To Have and Have Not - Bogey and Bacall
12 Angry Men - Henry Fonda and several well known character actors
3:10 to Yuma - the original with Van Heflin and Glenn Ford
Australia - long but moves quickly. Two thumbs up, Beautiful scenery.

I watch TCM most of the time and caught the original 3:10 to Yuma around the time the remake came out. I've always liked Glenn Ford.....and, I'm not sure why, but I'm oddly attracted to Van Heflin???
