Sometimes the best way to beat your enemy is to steal from your enemy. It's essentially doubles your production. The only path that we could take that would lead us to gaining 8 WAR on the Cubs was to take it from the Cubs themselves.

I think that logic kinda has to assume the player was plan A for both teams. With Heyward that was definitely the case. With Fowler, and Lackey the other direction, the team that had him wasn't really pursuing him and had made other contingencies.

i wouldn't call fowler an upper-end player per se...i'd put him in the same range as peralta and beltran, who they identified as their need/want, and went and got them.
