Mike: Dbacks fan here and I have been scouting out the NL WC competition. I understand all the O/U/logic for the teams besides two–mets and cardinals. Cardinals have weak rotation depth and an average at best bullpen to go along with an above average, but hardly excellent set of position players. Mets have two aces, pretty solid collection of arms behind those guys to comprise 3 other rotation slots and a sneaky (really?) good bullpen. They have a similarly above average set of position players as the Cards (with maybe best OF offense in MLB). What am i Missing?

Dan Szymborski: I think you may be underestimated the Cards rotation depth.

Dan Szymborski: Even if you decided that Wainwright is done, they have six pitchers that may be average or better.

I'm fairly down on the Cards this year, but the Mets are kind of a weird comparison. The Cardinals are stuffed with depth. Arguably, people have been saying they have too much depth that needs to be turned into something else for years now.

The Mets rotation might have better stuff and better ceilings, but it also has less depth and a collective medical history record that looks awful.

Cubs and Cards seem to be competing at different levels these days. Anyone who doesn't admit that is avoiding the truth.

I’m in Mesa this week checking out the Cubs. Word down here is they expect to jump out of the starting gate quickly, no three month mulligan this year. With their star studded lineup and superior pitching, it appears to me the FO is wildcarding this year with hopes of catching the Cubs next year or in 2020 if their highly touted pitching prospects materialize. This goes to what I’ve been saying on these posts for a while: the Cubs are very good and trying to be great, the Cards are average trying to get better. Fair summation?

Rangers in talks with Lincecum on a one-year deal, possibly to pitch in the bullpen/close.

I kid of wish the Cards had messed around with someone like Lincecum instead of bringing back Mujica and Motte in essentially the same experimental role. But, we didn't have room.

I think I would take Norris over him.

Astros GM Jeff Luhnow said Wednesday that Yuli Gurriel (hand) will likely be out 5-6 weeks.
Gurriel underwent surgery Wednesday morning in Houston to remove the hook of the hamate bone in his left hand. That procedure can sometimes take up to eight weeks to recover from and will often have lasting effects, but the Astros are giving off an optimistic tone. "It was not something that happened in the last few days," Luhnow told reporters. "It’s something that has been there for a few years, but it was non-symptomatic until recently." Marwin Gonzalez is likely to serve as the Astros' primary first baseman in the early going this season. Tyler White, A.J. Reed, and J.D. Davis could also be in the mix depending on how things go this spring.

Royals sign Lucas Duda for 1 year, $3.5 million

Good reminder that the Cardinals should sign somebody
