Well, the winner of the Missouri/Kansas game still has to play Oklahoma for the Big 12 championship.
Yeah, I think the real statement would be "winner of the Big 12 championship", because if OU wins out, they're in the championship.

Well in a nutshell whichever Big 12 team wins out will play in the National Championship game. If Mizzou, Kansas, or Oklahoma loses a game but still wins the Big 12 then it becomes a lot more cloudy.
I can't believe that Mizzou controls its own destiny regarding the National Championship. As stated earlier, winning out is definitely a tall order for the Tigers, but they did play Oklahoma pretty tough in Norman, and did have the lead at one point in the second half I believe. There's no reason why Mizzou can't win against Kansas or Oklahoma, especially since the games will be at neutral sites (the Big 12 game is at a neutral site no?)

It's tough for me to say how good any of those Big 12 teams really are, because the only really good teams any of them have played are OU and Mizzou playing each other (and to a lesser extent, OU playing Texas). So they all look good against the also-rans of the Big 12, but how good is the Big 12 this year? I'm not really sure.
That's not really a knock. If and when one of these teams faces a LSU in the championship (who's played in the rather difficult SEC all year), it will be the first true gauge of how good the conference is. They may find out that it's like the Big Ten last year (which looked strong enough until Ohio State got spanked by Florida, and Michigan got trounced by USC). Or they may find it was good all along.
Mizzou also beat Illinois, who beat Ohio State and is one of the best schools in the Big Ten this year. That's not a HUGE victory, but it's certainly a reputable one. After all, the Illini are ranked 19th in the BCS.
OU played Miami, which on the surface isn't impressive, except they embarrassed the crap out of them.
As for Mizzou, I wouldn't be one bit surprised to see them defeat both KU and OU. That lead they had that you reference, Ben, wasn't just in the 2nd half. It was in the 4th quarter. But if I was a bettin' man, I wouldn't bet on them winning both games. I've come to respect KU after their conference wins.
The bottom line is that if Mizzou wants to reach the national title game, they have:
-beat the #3 team in the country
-beat the #4 team in the country
And then they have to beat the #1 team in the country to win the NC. It's awesome that they're in that position but that's a tall order for any school.

LSU is good, but not invincible. A team with a good quarterback (not unlike Missouri and Chase Daniel) really frustrated their signature defense, so it's possible to beat them. They've had several close calls outside of losing to the Wildcats, too, so they're beatable.
I'm hoping we (the Vols) can win out to get a chance at LSU in the SEC Championship. We seem to play best with our backs against the wall.

I think that ranking is about right for Illinois, and really their win over Ohio State was a bit over their heads. Mizzou did beat them, but it wasn't by a huge margin, and it was at a neutral site.
All I'm really saying is that Mizzou is good. Top 10 good. And they'll certainly deserve a spot in the championship if they win out. I'm just not sure they're really #1 or #2 good. But maybe they are.

Assuming Oregon drops out of the top five (I'm sure they will), Missouri will actually have to beat #3, #2 and #1 in the BCS standings to win the national title. Yes, this is assuming that Kansas, Oklahoma and LSU don't lose any unexpected games this weekend, but still - how cool would that be for Missouri? Nobody could say they didn't deserve it after taking down the top three.

And trust me when I say this...I'd love for them to be there.....but it ain't happening
Because you don't think they can beat Kansas and Oklahoma, or because you think they won't have a legitimate case if they win the Big 12? If it's the former, I can respect your opinion, but if it's the latter...

Look, they may not beat Kansas STATE this weekend..
If they win out they deserve to play for the N.C., especially with Oregon's loss last night..
I just don't see them winning out, and in fact, the only team I think that has a legit shot to win out in the Big 12 is Oklahoma...and again....it's not because I don't want Missouri to go to the NC...I hate Oklahoma with a passion (Bob Stoops spurning Iowa..his alma mater...to coach Oklahoma) and I'd rather see Mizzou go then Kansas...

And, I'm betting, that that has never been done before (not in the last three games of the season). But it would be
#2 Kansas - we win
#2 Oklahoma (moves up after KU loses to Mizzou)
#1 LSU (of course that's assuming LSU wins out as well)
The Big 12 Championship game could be #1 vs #2 and the big 12 champion favored to win the NC.

I'm guessing that probably hasn't happened with the last 3 games of the season ever before. Ohio State played the #2 team in the country 3 different times last year. That's pretty impressive (until they lost--OK, got spanked--the last time).
