You missed the point entirely.

What we're doing with Smoltz after 2 IP is roughly equivalent to deciding that Pujols is a terrible hitter because he looked absolutely lost in three consecutive ABs last night.

I completely get that, it's only 2 innings.

Are you watching the game though? He looks absolutely filthy. I think all that's going on right now is those that were exited that the team picked up Smoltz are now even more excited after watching him carve up the Padres like a stuffed turkey.

He could still end up with an 8.00 ERA in St. Louis by the end of the season, but so far he looks good, good enough to get overly excited 2 IPs in.
