Cardinals just took Jordan Hicks, a prep RHP from Houston, TX.

EDIT: not on MLB's Top 200.

A native of Houston who pitched for Cypress Creek High School, Hicks received 2015 Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American honors and was named to the Texas All-Region First Team. The Tulane University commit was also picked as a 2015 NABF High School Preseason First Team All-American. As a junior in 2014, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound righty helped his school to a 20-15 record and a district championship.

He's a kid with a decent amount of pitchability for a high schooler. He has a good changeup. Throws the standard 89-92 from the right side. Has some sink. Not a big-time recruit, and another kid you would think we could get for near slot range.

This is a guy who reminds me of Steven Farinaro quite a bit.

Ummm...I'm not sure I like drafting just a 2Bman.......I though we were going for athleticism & bats?

Kep Brown won't sign. Local news guy (here in Charleston) has already spoken to him and Kep has his mind made up. Said he would wait a day or two out of respect of the cards organization

I think the odds are long too, but I don't rule it out entirely yet. With teenagers, something could easily change.

Cardinals next pick is Paul DeJong, a C from Illinois St.


The catcher was a standout at Illinois State this season, pacing the Redbirds with 70 hits, 15 doubles, 47 runs scored and 48 RBIs through 51 games started this season. He also hit .333 with a .427 on-base percentage and .605 slugging while leading the Missouri Valley Conference in home runs (14). He also led the team in most offensive categories in 2014, and was both years named to the all-conference First Team.

MLB listed him as a 3B, but looks like they're taking him as a C. Senior sign.

He's a redshirt junior, so not really a senior. They'll try him at C, where he would be a legit C if he could be passable. He can really hit. He crushed the Northwoods League last summer, hitting 20 HR's with wood. The kid can really hit, and has legit plate discipline.

The Missouri Valley Conference had Jon Harris, Matt Hall, Jeff Degano, Chance Adams, Brandon Koch, Drew Smith, and their Friday starter whose name escapes me right now all drafted in the top-8 rounds, with three of them going in the first three rounds, so the arms in that league are legitimate.

Bat only player with no definitive position. The Cardinals really drafted a ton of bat first players this year, but I like them going for hit tool and pop over plus athletes who are more projections.

Kep Brown is a Miami commit and is supposedly going to school. 6-5 corner OF with massive power. I really like the kid and think he's much better than Bellinger, a guy we drafted last year and didn't get him away from Duke with a similar profile. Brown has some of the best right-handed power in the draft and I think it'd take at least $1.5 million to sign him. I'd have to run the numbers to see if we could get to that number for him.
