A rival executive said he heard the St. Louis Cardinals' initial offer to Dexter Fowler is in the same range as the four years and $60 million that the Toronto Blue Jays reportedly made.

I've had a really light day today, so I've just been refreshing Twitter at GRB all day waiting for something to happen. I figure Fowler will decide soon, since other bigger pieces have already signed/moved.MrCrowesGarden wrote:Saxon:

Re: Dexter Fowler
This entire thing about Heyward is the dumbest thing ever. As others pointed out, our players have fun. It's a big reason why Deadspin hates us. Heyward got a slightly better deal with the Cubs due to the opt outs. That's it. Players never, ever, never ever say it's about the money, but it always always always is about the money. A secondary reason is because they had a better situation for him as a player and his personality. But reason #1 is it was a slightly better deal. Every time a player leaves one team for another like this, the team the player left goes through hand wringing like this. Every time. It's pointless and dumb. Our front office made a calculation and didn't think he was worth going higher for. We can disagree with that. But don't get hung up on some white lie Heyward told. If Heyward rebounds offensively to some extent, and he opts out in a couple years to go to some other team, it will also be 100% about money, but he'll have some other reason that he'll say in public.

Re: Dexter Fowler
It would make sense. His market seems mostly dried up, and the Giants are likely out of it now, so it seems to be between us and Toronto.Fat Strat wrote:I've had a really light day today, so I've just been refreshing Twitter at GRB all day waiting for something to happen. Re: Dexter Fowler
I think I would rather take my chances with Adam Eaton than Fowler. Let Toronto have him. I'm talking myself out of him as we get closer to decision time.
I mean, do we really want a 32 year old CF'er? Not really.

Re: Dexter Fowler
I mean, I do think that Fowler is worth the money he'll get and he would not be a bad sign at all. I just can't get worked up about him either signing or not signing. Doesn't make much of a difference in the long-run and the way the Cards are treating Peralta makes me wary of Fowler's year 3 and year 4.
In year 4, when we're stuck with him and stuck playing him, are we going to want him? No... probably not. So, either way we go here is fine with me.
