On everything else she's a conservative. It shouldn't be that shocking that she favors teaching abstinence or wants creationism included in curriculum. I find neither of those things particularly bothersome in a vice-president or president. It's not what I'd prefer, but the important decisions in those areas are made locally and not something Presidents typically have time to bother with.

I guess the trooper thing is perhaps an issue, but even first reading about it I didn't find it that big of a deal. The trooper in question should have been fired from what I've read. And I don't see how it can be proven that she fired the guy over this incident. Either way, even the best politicians pull strings and use their influence and this one doesn't seem that egregious.
What happens if all-of-the-sudden McCain starts dropping like a rock in polls, specifically in swing states? Might a convenient excuse for her to drop out come up?

On the experience thing, it's subtle, but there's a big difference. Obama has been preparing to be President of the United States for at least a couple of years now. Probably back to 2004, and possibly even before then. Now I don't know Palin very well, but I'm not sure if it was ever in her political goals to be President. I know we aren't electing her to be President, but we are electing her to be "one heartbeat away". I don't know about you, but I feel comfortable with someone of Obama's experience if he's been carefully looking into policies, procedures, etc. preparing him to become President. I don't get the sense that Palin has been doing that. And I don't feel like "cramming for the exam" over the next couple of months is the same thing either.
Well, most likely, she'll be in training for that job for four years.

If she has to take over, she does have experience with budgets (and making the tough decisions involved, balancing interests, etc...), hiring a staff and delegating authority, dealing with a legislature and exercising vetoes. She's actually vetoed spending, which is more than I can recall Bush doing. In terms of the supposed Republican philosophy of cutting spending, she seems to be the real deal.

This article details some of that:

Palin's veto ax lops $268 million from budget

I get that Alaska is small. But would we be calling the governor of Delaware or Rhode Island or Maine too inexperienced? I'm not so sure. And I imagine Alaska presents it's own unique set of challenges.

I think the "executive experience" thing is overplayed, but it's not unimportant either.

The media is all over Palin, I am probably wrong, but I sure don't remember this big of an attempt to blast and discredit Obama when he announced he was running for president.

You are half-right. When Obama announced he was running, everyone assumed that Hillary Clinton would be the nominee and de facto president. It was when Obama started gaining momentum is when things like Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko, William Ayers, vaguely racist and religious smears and Sean Klannity's shrieks of "WHAT IF HE REALLY BELIEVES WHAT THAT PREACHER SAID?!" came about.

The Jeremiah Wright thing was the biggest story/non-story of 2008 so far. It was repeated on a loop on Fox News and it was perceived to be so bad that Obama actually had to give a speech on race in America to put out the flames.

I have a hard time thinking that you actually believe this. Honestly. I hold your intelligence in high regard and either I'm really missing something here or you are.
See my post above. I think they bring different things to the table. I haven't seen anyone say why Obama is obviously more qualified. As far as I'm concerned they're both fine, and their decisions and positions are more relevant to me.

Ghost is right. Sarah Palin sold cookies and put the governor's plane on eBay for chrissakes!

Why is it that people are having difficulty recognizing the distinction between Obama and Palin. Experience aside, Obama "ran" for president and has "earned" the position he's in now. He underwent extensive scrutiny and the American people had the chance to get to know him and see him and hear him talk and debate. And now they've chosen him to be the Democratic candidate.

Had Obama been picked from out of nowhere to be someone's VP you can bet, in addition to the pick being chastised as pandering to minorities, would have been examined thoroughly.

Yes, that's likely correct. But when the President in question would be the oldest ever elected, you do try to keep in mind the possibility of him not being able to complete his term. Or if nothing else, having medical complications arise where she needs to really be playing the part of President.

Maybe part of it is the Alaska thing, because it does barely feel like part of the US. Maybe she has been preparing more for this type of role than I've given her credit for. It still just strikes me as a choice that seems to be 99% for political reasons, and 1% for performance reasons.

I guess I'm too busy to keep up with this thread. Everyone enjoy the ride. I'm out like McCain's chances.
