Re: Update: Met's pursuing Holliday, P 134
I'd walk up to boras right now and say I'll give you 106 mil over 6 years. 16 mill a year and 2 mil a year for 5 years after, and for grins we'll give the NTC, I'd even consider throwing in an performance-based option for a 7th year at 20 mil, but it would be a pretty stiff target to reach (one that no one would be able to complain about the 20 mil he'd cost that last year) that would equal 18 mil a year if it all played out.
I know that is just bidding against yourself, but it should create a little good will with Holliday, and gives him an opportunity to say yes to an increased offer instead of continuing to play this waiting game and coming out looking stupid.
Boras looks stupid no matter what in this situation, once again misjudging the market, leaving a client hanging, utilyzing obvious and ineffective tactics, etc. His only hope of looking good is a yankee/bosox offer of 140 mill (which is still significantly less than tex money, and wouldn't include opt outs or NTC either because they wouldn't have to offer either of those)

The Cardinals will present Matt Holliday with an offer worth about $16 million a season, according to MLB.com.
The annual money, at least to Holliday, will seem underwhelming after he was seeking in excess of $20 million per year earlier this offseason. What is intriguing about the proposal is its reported length -- possibly as long as an eight-year commitment, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Holliday is reportedly seeking $18 million per year, but an acquiescence by St. Louis in contract length could conceivably lead to negotiation progress. Stay tuned.

How about, 8/120 that is extremely backloaded, say 20 mil per for the last 2-3 seasons.
Then, give an opt out clause after year 5 or 6.
So....guaranteed the Cardinals get 5 years of MattyHo (as someone else referred to him, I love it) at 60 million. If he stays, then they are on the hook for 8/120.
1. The Cardinals should love this deal.
2. Matt Holliday, if he truly desires security, has an 8 year offer on the table at 15 mil per year. That's a lot of money regardless of what the market is.
3. Scott Boras, well, probably wouldn't be happy. But, there would be that opt out in 5 years.

8/120 and 5/90 are pretty close to the same thing. In 2008 dollars you are paying him to be a 4.5 win player.
The latter has seemed like a reasonable number for the last six months. If that's what it takes and you've made similar offer already, then just make it happen and call it an offseason.

What your asking him to accept is the equivalent of about $10million per year today and there's no way he'll except that.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:How about, 8/120 that is extremely backloaded, say 20 mil per for the last 2-3 seasons.

Probably not. But I like the idea of it.AdmiralKird wrote:What your asking him to accept is the equivalent of about $10million per year today and there's no way he'll except that.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:How about, 8/120 that is extremely backloaded, say 20 mil per for the last 2-3 seasons.

I don't understand this. One is 15 per year for 8 years. The other is 18 for 5.haltz wrote:8/120 and 5/90 are pretty close to the same thing. In 2008 dollars you are paying him to be a 4.5 win player.
If you are saying those figures are "close enough" then I guess I wouldn't argue that, but then I'd question why we as a collective fanbase quivel over smaller differences all the time.
