Re: NCAA Basketball Thread
So after that unimpressive showing for Purdue....do they skip the NCAA and go to the NIT?

No way. Purdue has 20 wins against a very good SOS with no horrible losses. Their worst non-conf loss was a neutral game vs. Butler. They have good (top 50) wins against Michigan, Temple, Iona, and Northwestern(twice).vinsanity wrote:So after that unimpressive showing for Purdue....do they skip the NCAA and go to the NIT?
They might be the last B1G team in, but I think they are definitely in.

Purdue is basically a lock at this point, if any team will not go from the Big 10 it would be Northwestern having a horrible performance, they'd have to lose badly to Minnesota to not get in with Tennessee doing well in the SEC tourney to knock them out.
I can't believe I'm as blah as I am about the tourney, despite UK having the most talent in the NCAA (I think Syracuse is the best team).

My Cats are capable of surprises, including ugly ones. If they crap themselves and blow a reasonable chance at their very first NCAA, I will probably vandalize some city property.UK wrote:Purdue is basically a lock at this point, if any team will not go from the Big 10 it would be Northwestern having a horrible performance, they'd have to lose badly to Minnesota to not get in with Tennessee doing well in the SEC tourney to knock them out.

Re: NCAA Basketball Thread
I still have trouble with a team with a losing conference record (at this point) getting, especially with no big road wins (played MSU & UM tough). Beat Minn and Michigan and I think there's a legit case. Right now, if they're one and done or lose to Michigan in the 2nd rd, I think other teams should be ahead of them.Hungary Jack wrote:My Cats are capable of surprises, including ugly ones. They beat MSU, and their RPI is 50. IIRC, their SOS is 14th and they have no bad losses. But yeah, win one of those 2 OT games v. Michigan and the squeaker vs. Purdue, and the case is much more convincing.UK wrote:I still have trouble with a team with a losing conference record (at this point) getting, especially with no big road wins (played MSU & UM tough). I am biased, but I think they have earned a bid. Most pundits agree. I hope they can erase any doubt during the conf tourney.

It's a weaker field with the extra teams, but Northwestern's just 5-12 against the RPI top 100(1-10 against the Top 50). That's not a hard bar to reach, even for small conference teams.

I think that's why they call them bubble teams. That 5-12 record includes:Transmogrified Tiger wrote:It's a weaker field with the extra teams, but Northwestern's just 5-12 against the RPI top 100(1-10 against the Top 50). That's not a hard bar to reach, even for small conference teams.
- 2pt loss at home to OSU
- 2 OT losses to Michigan
- 5 pt road loss to Indiana
- 2 pt home loss to Purdue
- 8pt loss at Creighton
WVU also has 12 losses, a sub .500 conference record, a very high SOS, and 4 wins vs. top 50 teams
Cincy is 21-9 and 6-3 vs. top 50 teams, but somehow has a 69 RPI. They should dance.

RPI is a load of crap.
Also, I am in favor of penalizing Northwestern for having the ugliest home court in basketball.

There hasn't been many upsets so far which has helped, Drexel is the only one that lost the conf tourney that will likely still get in. Creighton likely saved NU's bid with the OT win vs ILL ST.Hungary Jack wrote:I think that's why they call them bubble teams.
