Re: Rant: Caring more about politics than baseball
This thread has taught me that I'm going to post less in political threads and I'm going to try and be more insightful in baseball threads.

Re: Rant: Caring more about politics than baseball
I admit that I often take time off from the more contentious threads for a couple of reasons: 1) my CardsTalk experience taught me to drop discussions when they get too heated (or I react too personally), and 2) I try to see most posters' perspectives and react accordingly. I assume most people have informed reasons for believing what they do, even if I don't ultimately share some of those beliefs. It genuinely pains me when posters I respect clash online, even though such conflict is normal.
I agree with jim that baseball is the heart of this forum, although it is moderated well enough, and has enough bright posters, to accommodate a range of interests. I tend to jump all around here because I have a variety of interests, and we have enough good people to accommodate discussion of those interests. These other topics do enrich the forum, but it is easy to lose a sense of commonality driven by a love of baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals.
I'm never going to bring a detailed personal knowledge of the game, or scout's perspective, or stat-person's perspective, but just a love of the game. So I hope that those of you who do bring that knowledge don't feel like you're wasting your time here. I sincerely appreciate your posts.

This site has an awful lot of value as a curator of culture and news and viewpoints for me, as AW said.
Unfortunately I have bad habits of getting hung up on stuff (for example, our POS-but super affordable!-offseason) and react strongly and, ironically, self-righteously to what I think is self-righteousness or condescension or the wrong kind of personal/partisan (not just political) chest-pounding. Hmm, this sounds more humble-braggy than I meant it to. The problem is I fall into traps of no longer considering, and going round and round for no good.
And while there were some recent events where the board's newer more contentious culture was quite useful, I do think it's a good time for a bit of a come to Jesus moment.
I'll try to be a better citizen because there is, as I said, good value for me.

And now the thread ranting about talking too much about politics has turned into a thread on politics.
